Michael J. Losier, author of LAW OF ATTRACTION, has written a follow-up to that work, LAW OF CONNECTION: The Science of Using NLP to Create Ideal Personal and Professional Relationships. In this new work, Losier uses four different communication styles and suggests a how-to in applying them to build or repair rapport (a connection) with others. Whether you need help in developing and repairing relationships in your personal or professional life, Losier provides a common-sense approach that will improve your relationship skills.

The four NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) styles are: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Digital. He even provides a self-assessment test to determine which style your own communication falls into. I seemed to be a combination of both Visual and Kinesthetic.

Losier states that it is a matter of knowing and recognizing what style the person you are communicating with uses and adapting your own style so you can better understand the other person. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Words, mannerisms and attitude all go into communicating with others. I remember when I volunteered for the Make-A-Wish Foundation who had the delightful job of talking with children to learn of their deepest desires, I would sit on the floor, sit with them on their beds, whatever. My goal was to get down to their level so they would open up and talk with me more honestly. It works with children and it works with adults. What Losier is saying here is that one has to understand where the other person is coming from before they can communicate effectively.

This is a good book with practical advice and methods that you can use in your everyday communication. It would be a good work to have in your library for future reference. We can never learn too much about communicating with others. Our own survival depends upon it.

This review is from: Law of Connection: The Science of Using NLP to Create Ideal Personal and Professional Relationships (Hardcover)
Unfortunately, there is nothing new in this book that hasn't already been outlined in much greater detail. I've known about the 4 personality types for almost 20 years. What I've known (and what is certainly true of myself) is that most people don't fall squarely into 1 personality type. I am straight down the middle between two types. Not to mention, trying to fit someone into a type without giving them the opportunity of testing for accuracy, can become a waste of time. I like the author, just not this book. I waited and waited for this book to come out, spent good money for it, and realized that there is nothing different, innovative or even interesting here. The book is full of nagging details and rules. Too much difficulty, and too much time required to get it all down. I want to spend time enjoying myself, and connecting to others in ways that are enjoyable. Not making it a tedious, technical and limiting process. Sorry, but this is my honest review.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not real impressed, June 30, 2009

Truthfully, I found this book to be fairly weak. It would be one thing if the four communication styles were distinctively different from one other; but that is really not the case. In my opinion, most people are a blend of these styles; thus basing the foundation of this book on these styles didn't really add a lot of insight. Sorry. Perhaps the author would have been better using personality styles...at least those are more distinct from each other.

Michael Losier is a fantastic teacher and author of another great book on Law of Attraction. His new book "Law of Connection" is a great companion book.

I learned so much from the Law of Connection. Great Techniques to communicate better and if you want to improve your rapport with co-workers, family members and friends, this is the book for you.

The most valuable information for me was learning about the communication style, how to identify them and how to address each of them for better communication and connection.

Great value, great learning and a great book

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for understanding and improving ALL our relationships!, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Law of Connection: The Science of Using NLP to Create Ideal Personal and Professional Relationships (Hardcover)
Michael Losier has done it again! Michael's talent lies in taking complex subject matter and making it so easy to understand. He gives practical, concrete tips and strategies on how to use the Law Of Connection to improve relationsips with all those around us.

After reading his book and taking the self-assessment, I discovered my own communication style and started to explore the styles of my family members, friends, students and colleagues. Armed with the knowledge learned in "Law of Connection" I am now able to adapt my communication to each person so that they better understand me and I better interpret what they are saying.

As a teacher and trainer, this has been an invaluable resource. I find that by using Michael's tips I can capture the attention of a wider audience and make sure that they all understand my message.

I HIGHLY recommend "Law of Connection" to anyone seeking to QUICKLY and EFFECTIVELY improve communication skills and build stronger rapport.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good information but bad presentation, December 18, 2009
I enjoyed listening to the information in this book but found it hard to listen to this author. I believe some of this information is getting lost because the author sounds like a bad communicator or at least a boring one. How can this person tell me how to connect with people if I don't want to connect with him? This is a very dry listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Effective Communication Tips, June 20, 2009
By
This review is from: Law of Connection: The Science of Using NLP to Create Ideal Personal and Professional Relationships (Hardcover)
Knowing which of four communication styles a person has enables you to connect more effectively with them. Losier lists those four as: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and digital. A visual communicator tends to use his "mind's eye" to comprehend messages. An auditory person focuses on sounds. A kinesthetic communicator is relationship oriented, while a digital person uses a logical approach in decoding messages.

Losier says although your style may be different from people with whom you interact, if you're aware of how they process information, you can adapt to the way they're most likely to receive your message. His advice sounds solid and he discusses both personal and professional contexts.

My concern was that he did not cite any sources or explain where his four categories originate. I would like to have seen where his work was based. Did he come up with the categories out of thin are? Observation? From someone's academic study? Overall his tips seem to be helpful in helping people connect with each other.

3.0 out of 5 stars Terrible!, August 4, 2009
This was the unabridged audiobook on CD edition (3 CDs/2.5 hours).

The audiobook was read by the author. Normally this would be a good thing, but this particular author had a rather whiny voice. Thankfully I only had to listen to him for three discs!

The "Expert Edward" section was helpful, in that it provided an "in context" discussion of the four communication styles in action. Unfortunately for me, I apparently don't fit into any of the styles (surprise, surprise!). :) I gather I have qualities of each style with no dominant style. Guess I'm unique!

Obviously the author has never attended corporate training events as he's regurgitating the techniques that all corporate trainers use and that all attendees hate. These techniques have the trainers treating the attendees as kindergartners instead of the adults they actually are. I sincerely hope no trainer actually follows his deluded suggestions.

This is essentially a boring collection of information intended for salespeople or trainers. It provides no real new or interesting information to the reader. Also, I have no clue why this is called Law of Connection as it seems to have nothing to do with any Law of Attraction techniques I've ever read about.
