Book Description

0972001328 978-0972001328 January 1, 2002
This guide exposes the do’s and don’ts of orals and interviews through the eyes of the same professional testing experts who conduct oral interviews and develop interview questions. Information contained in this Guide will seldom be found elsewhere.

Readers are placed in the seat of panelists who are conducting interviews. They are provided with the same type of information that interviewers receive when they prepare to interview candidates. The guide provides test takers with the opportunity to better understand the mystique that surrounds testing and compels them to focus upon the correct way to prepare for for an oral test or interview.

The guide also includes a complete set of oral interview questions that have been used by panels during real interviews, accompanied with answers and explanations. A step-by-step walk through of correct and incorrect responses is provided to ensure that you know what to say - as well as HOW to say it.

Test Preparation Guidebook for Oral Tests & Interviews covers the following topics:

Overview of Law Enforcement Oral and Interview Testing Legal Aspects

The "New Way" of Conducting Orals and Interviews: Behavioral and Emotional Intelligence Assessment

Knowing What Oral Interview Panelists Know

A Typical Oral – Interview Panelists’ Workshop

Instructions Given To Oral Interview Panelists

The Rating Form

What You Need To Know In Order To Be Successful In Taking Tests

Complete Practice Oral Scenario - Including Comprehensive Answers (correct & incorrect responses), Explanations, Sample Panelists' Ratings, and Helpful Hints.

Questions that have been used during an actual oral interview.

This guide is a MUST for anyone who has advanced to the oral interview stage of any law enforcement exam.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful tool, but just that, a tool, September 15, 2006
By
Jeff (Dayton, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Law Enforcement Officer: Test Preparation Guidebook for Oral Tests & Interviews (Law Enforcement Series) (Paperback)
Don't buy this thinking its the "Holy Grail" of interviewing and suddenly you'll be king. However, it is another accessible tool that will guide you through it, and prepare you for the generic questions you'll hear everywhere.

For me, it didn't help me so much as to what to be prepared to say, rather, it helped me gauge and read the oral board's reactions to my answers. If I was headed in the wrong direction, based on what I read from this book, I could tell. If I hadn't used this book to study with, I probably wouldn't have.

And then I wouldn't have scored #1 on my very first oral board, ever. :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Refresher, March 12, 2007
By
Sergeant 304 (Moline, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Law Enforcement Officer: Test Preparation Guidebook for Oral Tests & Interviews (Law Enforcement Series) (Paperback)
I bought the book to review for an interview for a new position. It has been twenty years since I last interviewed. It was a good refresher, the 7 compentencies I think will be very useful. I think the book is geared more for first time police interview but I did find it useful for my upcomming sergeant interview.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, April 14, 2009
This review is from: Law Enforcement Officer: Test Preparation Guidebook for Oral Tests & Interviews (Law Enforcement Series) (Paperback)
This book is of little help. First off, it's printed like double-spaced paper for school, which makes it awkward to read. The index also does not provide page numbers for different subjects. In terms of context, I could have sat down over the weekend and wrote this book with no law enforcement interviewing experience. I am very disappointed.
