An awesome book for anyone and covers founding truths obout Orthodox Faith in God. I read this book outloud to my kids ages 5-10. I have this book in Russian as well and was very happy to find it in English translation here.A basic English language text suitable for teaching teenagers and adult catechumens, the original Russian edition (which ran for thirty-five years) drew upon many sources in pre-Revolutionary Russia and recognized the need to confirm the believer's faith in a sea of heterodoxy, skepticism, rationalism, and ecumenism. Representing traditional Orthodox Christianity, this edifying, richly illustrated book covers: Orthodox catechism, the sacred history of the Old and New Testaments, Church history, all aspects of Christian faith and life, and the divine services of the Orthodox Church. Suitable for all ages -- for home and school. This is one of those books that should be in every Orthodox home. This is the English edition of the classic Russian textbook designed for parents to teach their children "all the fundamental points of the Orthodox Christian faith and way of life." Because children are growing up quickly in a society that raises serious and agonizing questions the author does not teach in naive stories that remain stories only. It offers an overview of the whole of the Old and New Testaments as well as instruction on prayer, worship and what it means to live by the teaching of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. Lavishly bound and made to last. Well illustrated with black and white photographs and icons. 651 pages.

Was expecting this book to be a very detailed on how and why things are done in the Orthodox Church. The introduction is fantastic as it emphasizes the importance of teaching the how and why as opposed to just learning through inculcation. I found that the text in the book mainly covers topics that are very obvious such as the how and why one should make the sign of the cross; however, it does not get into step-by-step details of behavior or actions in Church. Overall, it is a good, fast read and you are certain to learn something from it.
