Book Description

Four years ago, Mitch Lawson moved across the breezeway from Mara Hanover and she fell in love with the tall, good-looking police detective who had an uncanny ability to dress well even though he’s single. It was not a stalker kind of love; she knows she has no hope since Mitch is way out of her league. That doesn’t change the fact that he’s her dream man.

Then one day Mara’s faucet won’t turn off and she knows nothing about plumbing. Being a good guy, Mitch offers to help then he invites himself over for pizza. Mara gives it a go but finds herself running away from him (literally) on their first date, standing him up their second and then she runs into him (again literally) on her way to save her ne’er do well, criminal cousin’s kids who’d just run away from their ne’er do well, criminal Dad.

Suddenly, Mara finds she has on her hands the guardianship of two kids and a gorgeous police detective who’s willing to do anything to help out… including giving fabulous foot rubs.

But Mara knows who she is and where she came from and she knows Detective Mitch Lawson is better than her. Hot law man Mitch disagrees and his challenge is to convince Mara to let go of her past and he sets about building a family at the same time he finds he also needs to protect them all against known and unknown adversaries that would tear them apart.

About the Author

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

My absolute least favorite of the Dream Man series and it is mostly because of the heroine.

When reading romances, I need to like the heroine. For me, the strength of the book largely rests on how I feel about her. A great heroine will outweigh a bad hero. The reverse however is not true. And that is what happened here. Mitch was an all-time fabulous hero. A stand-up guy right out the gate. A+ hero material. He was totally wasted on Mara.

Mara annoyed the ever-lovin' crap out of me. She had serious self esteem issues and as you read the book, you understand why. But holy-granola, those issues consumed her and the book to an unhealthy degree. Since the book was told mostly in first person, we were always in Mara's head living through her esteem issues. A lion's share of the early part of the book was about her utter belief that Mitch was too good for her.

There was a point when I lost count of how many of her sentences when she was in Mitch's presences were just 'Um...' or 'Uh...' He rendered her speechless. She was too overawed by him to be in any way an effective character. I was constantly wondering what the heck he saw in her? Around him she had the personality of a noodle. I guess she was hot.

Not only that, but her personal esteem issues tended to bleed out and became the fulcrum that powered her opinions of other people as well. Exasperating.

Eve though I have only read three of Kristen Ashley's books, I am finding that she has many strengths that appeal personally to me as a reader. She create dialogue, supporting characters and situations that simply draw the reader in and does not let go.

For instance, I love the fact that she doesn't write about the very wealthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, family and a very classy alpha.... February 6, 2012

Mitch Lawson has to be the absolute sweetest, classiest alpha in all of KA's many bks. Move over Tate've got competition at the top of the heap. Adored Mitch and Mara in this story about love and family. After reading the teaser on the author's website I was prepared to dislike Mara. I know KA's bks have a common theme of the resisting h and the hot alpha in pursuit. Glad to say I was so wrong about Mara. She definitely has issues and there were valid reasons for the way she feels and why. Mitch, so gentle, sweet, wise and patient, sees the promise of Mara and helps to draw her out from the misconception of who she thinks she is and they come to realize they're "made for each other". The addition of Mara's two adorable young cousins that are in her charge only help to round out this sweet, endearing story about love and family. Be prepared there are a few heartfelt teary moments to be had between Billy/Bud and Mitch (have Kleenex ready.) KA has such a knack with her story telling that makes the reader feel like they're in the same room with the characters. Exciting for me was the addition of several characters from other KA bks:, the Dream Man female posse along with the guys as well as the Hot Bunch from the Rock Chicks. A definite high point IMO was a scene in which the ultimate of hotness are assembled in one room...Mitch, Brock, Tack and Hawk (all of Dream Man series) along with Lee Nightengale and Luke (Rock Chick series). Had to pause and dawdle over that visualization for a while - Whew! All the Hot Bunch from Rock Chicks are mentioned with the exception of Hector (maybe he was busy giving Sadie "the business" and couldn't make an appearance). Definitely not disappointed in the realistic conclusion for Mara's cousin Bill and the epilogue was wonderful. Highly recommend this bk. Thinking Law Man will be near the top of the my KA stack next to Sweet Dreams and definitely worth a re-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "ten-point-five" love story February 4, 2012

Mitch Lawson is definitely a 10.5-plus on the hero-scale!! He grabbed my attention the moment he walked onto the pages of "Mystery Man." For me, that was just a tease and I wanted more, more, more. Thankfully, Kristen Ashley gave us more of Mitch, along with his fantastic HEA, in "Law Man." Now I'm truly feelin' the love. It is clear from the beginning that Mitch is going to represent the more "norm" side of the alpha male than the over-the-top ones we've seen in the previous books by this author. He's strong and direct but in a less harsh, unruly, and demanding tone. This storyline is sweeter and softer than some of the others, although filled with emotional ups and downs. I really enjoyed the change this time around. The relationship he built with not only Mara but the kids was truly an exceptional part of this story. His attentiveness to all their needs and well-being took my breath away. The romance between Mitch and Mara is perfectly portrayed. Their relationship grew in a believable and timely manner. I especially enjoyed watching Mara find herself and step into the light. Kristen Ashley continues to amaze me with her ability to give her readers the characters and stories that capture heart and soul. Evidence makes clear that editing was given more attention in "Law Man." As for the writing itself, I'm becoming more comfortable with KA's style and nothing seems to diminish my desire for more.

More About the Author

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
