About the Author
Leslie Pickering Francis, JD, PhD, is the Alfred C. Emery Professor of Law at the University of Utah S. J. Quinney College of Law, professor and chair, Department of Philosophy, and a member of the Division of Medical Ethics in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. She received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1974 and her JD from the University of Utah in 1981. She was a law clerk to Judge Abner Mikva of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1981-1982. Dr. Francis specializes in ethics, bioethics, philosophy of law, health law, and disability law. She is the author of a number of articles on issues in philosophy of law, health care and professional ethics. In the spring of 2000, she was awarded the University of Utah's Rosenblatt Prize for overall excellence in research, teaching, and academic service.
Linda F. Smith, JD, is a professor of law and Clinical Program Director of the University of Utah S. J. Quinney College of Law. She received her JD from Yale University and practiced family law in Massachusetts from 1976 until 1984, when she joined the University of Utah. She designed the curriculum for and taught in the Criminal Clinic, the Civil Clinic, and the Judicial Clinic, requiring her to maintain a broad general knowledge of the law. She continues to practice family law on a limited pro bono basis and in May, 2006 was awarded the University of Utah Distinguished Service Award.
