Editorial Reviews

With the departure of Detective Logan after the conclusion of year seven comes the emergence of Detective Zach Nichols (Jeff Goldblum) to effectively take Logan’s place as Wheeler’s (Julianne Nicholson) partner.

The Eighth Year features a suspense-packed caseload when Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) investigate the death of a drug dealer who was involved with a politician’s stepdaughter, race against the clock to track down a missing child, are tasked with hunting down a killer’s killer and more. Meanwhile, Nichols and Wheeler become submerged in the dark dealings of the celebrity restaurant world, investigate the stabbing of a young hipster and explore the murder of a high-profile CFO.

Part of television’s most successful franchise, Law & Order: Criminal Intent was created by entertainment kingpin Dick Wolf and ran for ten seasons.

3.0 out of 5 stars Season 8 - Not so great! August 1, 2012
By Ann
I really enjoyed season 7, but what happened?

By the end of eight, you could see D'Onofrio had reached his limit, and I'm not surprised he decided to quit after this dog's breakfast of a season. The editing was sloppy, and the direction was careless. And what was with the horrid out-of-character scripts?

Firstly, no reference was made to the events in 'Frame'. Just one discussion with Eames about Bobby's obvious depression would have satisfied, but nada!

Worse still, the eps were all aired in a different order from which they were filmed. I highly suggest you watch them in the correct sequence, so you better appreciate Goren's slow (but silent)recovery from his grief: Faithfully, Folie a Deux, Identity Crisis, Alpha Dog, Playing Dead, Lady's Man, All In,and Family Values.

Of these episodes, my personal favorites were 'Lady's Man', where both Erbe and D'Onofrio get a chance to shine, and 'Family Values'. The latter was a little heavy-handed, but it featured many talented returning guest actors from previous seasons, and the 'aria' made me cry.

The worst episodes were 'Faithfully' which had annoying guest stars (plus Bobby now magically has a niece - continuity please). And then there was the dreadful 'All In' where a character called 'Josh Snow' is ostensibly 'Joey Frost' in a dreadful sequel (of sorts) to the S5 ep 'Cruise to Nowhere' - an insult to long-term viewers.

Still, even a bad S8 episode has a few good moments and VDO and Erbe are always worth watching. Take 'Family Values' for example. Even though the script was a wasted opportunity to explore the Bobby/Frank/Francis Goren parallels, the 'aria' featuring D'Onofrio and Sam Trammel is quietly outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad to have it...wish it was the ENTIRE season October 27, 2012

Review by Ruby: I was very happy to receive my Season 8 set of LOCI today! I was, however, disappointed that it did NOT include the episode "The Glory That Was"! I paid for the entire season of 16 episodes -- and paid more by pre-ordering than I would pay now, a mere 4 days after release -- and still did not get the whole season, this episode apparently not being available at all now. This fact really should be put in the description of the product!

Nonetheless, I am happy to have the set (though I would have prefered a box cover which was not dented and wrinkled). Can't wait for the final 2 seasons of this iconic show to be released! My favorite of all crime shows!! And Robert Goren is the best of all possible detectives!! Vincent D'Onofrio rocks!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Law & Order C.I. Season 8 January 19, 2013
Verified Purchase
Unlike many VDO fans, I found myself surprised by how much I actually like Jeff Goldbum's character, Det. Nichols. He is quirky, but in a different way than Goren. Also, like many others, I couldn't understand some of the decisions/missed opportunities made by the producers in their stories this season.
Two glaring errors were in the episode 'All In', in which the character Josh Snow was obviously Joey Frost from season 5. There was no reason not to keep him as Joey Frost, which would have provided some continuity. (perhaps they couldn't get the original actor who played Joey for this episode?)
Also, in the episode 'Faithfully', Goren's 'new family' is most likely his previously unknown family via his biological father Mark Ford Brady (the infamous serial killer).
Also, the missing episode 'The Glory That Was' being withdrawn from broadcast (and not included on dvd) due to apparent pressure from outside the U.S. is especially galling.
And finally, there is the inexcusable falling off in manufacturing quality by Shout Factory, from the packaging to the lack of Subtitles (using the obsolete technology of Closed Captions). The use of Closed Captions instead of Subtitles causes people with hearing trouble to make a choice. Watch in HD and have no visible dialogue. OR, hook up your equipment with Standard Definition (RCA red, white yellow) cables and see the dialogue, but have to watch the picture in Standard (Tube type TV) Definition.
Shame on Universal for treating Law & Order C.I. like a proverbial red haired step child!

3.0 out of 5 stars D'Onofrio the magnificent! December 23, 2012

This show and Vincent D'Onofrio have held me captive for many years. The attention to detail and well researched story lines have kept it interesting, Although I will continue to watch the many season reruns, I feel that the last three years were not as good as the beginning years. Not as much physical hi-jinks as before. Still love the show and cast and glad it had a long run. Like to see VDO in another series instead of the questionable movies he made during and after this show, in my opinion, not that it stops me from watching everything he is in. VDO is far too great an actor not to be doing A material.

Since being a fan from the original Law & Order. I expected nothing but the best with criminal intent. I've enjoyed watching this season as much as the rest of the others
. It was very interesting to see how the introduction of new characters blended in well with the original cast. It's been a delight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short lived
It is too bad the Julianne Nicholson's tenure on the show was so short. She played opposite Jeff Goldblum very well and would have made a good long term addition.
