Editorial Reviews

From the acclaimed franchise watched by over 20 million weekly viewers comes Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Focusing on the NYPD's Major Case Squad, the series stars Vincent D'Onofrio (Men in Black) as Detective Robert Goren, an exceptionally dedicated homicide investigator bent on putting the baddest of the bad behind bars. He and his partner, Detective Alexandra James (Kathryn Erbe, Oz) tackle the toughest assignments their commanding officer, Captain James Deakins (Jamey Sheridan, Chicago Hope), manages to throw their way. With the legal assistance from no-nonsense District Attorney Ron Carver (Courtney B. Vance, The Tuskegee Airmen), the squad quickly gets down to cases using all the psychological tools at their disposal to get inside the very minds of the city's most dangerous criminals in this compelling dramatic series from renowned producer Dick Wolf. "One": Carl Atwood and his girlfriend, Gia, have enlisted three people to help them plan and execute a major jewelry heist: Carson, fresh out of a Canadian prison; Nathan, an expert in phone identification; and a muscular Serbian named Zivkovic.

He gives the same authority we know and love from Dan Florick in Law and Order: SVU and S. Epatha Merkerson in the Law and Order mother ship.

This was a great episode...it was about 45 minutes long due to where they would have put the ads.

The episode contained here is a very good one. And I can think of nothing bad to say about it. And the documentary is very good as well. But you get the SAME episode and the SAME documentary {no other extra's though} PLUS 22 more episodes with the first season set. If you can not afford the first season set this would be better than nothing. But if you can afford it, avoide this and buy the first season. Had I known the first season DVD's were comming 5 months ago I WOULD HAVE!!

This is typical of a bad DVD release. It looks like a crude attempt to extract as much revenue as possible from large base of loyal fans. Some reviewers who wax lyrical over the 'special' interview features and "insight into the show" in this single episode DVD either work for the publisher or miss the point that any of these items could have been included in a 'full season' release. This piecemeal approach is frustrating for real fans of the series who, to date, have seen only one complete season released. I for one will protest with my wallet. It stays shut until the complete seasons are released.

I realize that $20 seems like a lot to spend for a single LOCI episode that you probably already have on tape. But there are two reasons why you should buy this DVD today. First, the interview featurette is a rare opportunity to see D'Onofrio out of character and hear him talking as himself. We also get interesting trivia and fun behind-the-scenes details from Dick Wolf, Rene Balcer, Kathryn Erbe, Courtney Vance, and Jamey Sheridan. Second, the best way to get the LOCI first and second year box sets released fast is to show the depth of the fan base by buying this item. It's a cherry on top bonus to get the original L&O pilot, which is very rarely shown on TV. V-sisters and Gorenistas (and you know who you are), you need this in your collection. Trust me!

This is included on the first season DVD. Using the word "premiere" makes it seem like it is something other than the first episode. I should have read the reviews - there is nothing new on this DVD.

This is the premiere episode of a great show where the audience is introduced to two detectives, who use the deducting method, psychology and intuition more than a gun.

It is intriguing and sometimes funny the way detective Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) plays with the offenders the cat and mouse game.

Through the years, the initial picture of the main characters remains the same and, even though some episodes are a little too slow, it is the best of the shows created from the original Law & Order.

This DVD contains 2 sets of interviews totalling approximately 41 minutes. One is with the Criminal Intent cast, Rene Balcer and Dick Wolf. The other set includes the original Law & Order cast, with the exception of Steven Hill. The DVD is well worth the price, just for these interviews alone.

This pilot was truly a vision of things to come with this series. Criminal Intent is my favorite of all the Law & Order series. Vincent D'onofrio was on point as always. In my opinon he makes the show what it is with his quirks. This is a must for all fans.

As far as television pilots go, this one is phenomenal! It features an intriguing mystery with a cunning villain behind it all. On our side, we’ve got a couple of smart detectives, one of whom is a bit quirky, who follow the trail of clues to catch the bad guy.
I really like the fact that there are no personal connections in this case for the police. Their simple motivation is to catch the guys who robbed a jewelry store and murdered three people in the process. That motivation is plenty. Also, there isn’t this obsession on the part of the detectives, played by Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, where they’re seen working all night and at home and all those other places that obsessed cops work. No, they’re in the office and hitting the streets of New York City to get the job done…because it is their job.
Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe work great together. Their interactions leave me wondering how long the actors rehearsed everything to get that comfortable feeling that can come with working with someone for a few years. Their superior officer, played by Jamey Sheridan, is also great. He gives the same authority we know and love from Dan Florick in Law and Order: SVU and S. Epatha Merkerson in the Law and Order mother ship. But his more subdued demeanor makes him his own man. In the end, he still exudes the authority needed to hold onto that captain’s position.
I found it especially nice that Jamey Sheridan’s Captain James Deakins was skeptical of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Detective Robert Goren’s theories about a smokescreen early in the episode after that mobster was found. What made it even better is that this plot device didn’t stick around for the rest of the episode.
