About the Author

Hense [hen(t)s] R. Ellis II is a small town guy, a 1985 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, and a former Assistant Attorney General who spent ten years fighting the bad guys . . . until some of them began to remind him of certain fellow members of the bar. He now works with a private lender and focuses his efforts on providing low interest rate church loans. He likes to write, to help orphan children, and to travel. AUTHOR’S NOTE When I wrote LAW SCHOOL, I sought to add some new ingredients to the legal thriller format. Hence, as you read this story, you should find unique characters (a curious protagonist, an anti-hero with a sense of humor), a unique setting (LAW SCHOOL may be the first mystery ever set in and around a law school.), a unique genre (a legal thriller blended with a coming-of-age story), and a healthy measure of themes and morals, e.g., “The first thing to learn about the real world is that it’s mostly fake.” Hence, when you’re in LAW SCHOOL, it is wise to stay awake; it is wise to pay attention.

I began this novel, not knowing what to expect. Once I started reading, I could not put it down! It had me from the "get-go". Surprises from cover to cover. Read it in two days! I've sampled all the big name authors, and what amazes me is that unknown writers such as Hense Ellis can create a story and execute it as well, or even better, than Grisham, Patterson, and the rest. Not only does LAW SCHOOL contain a compelling murder mystery set in a unique location, it also somehow mixes in a character study and a coming-of-age story about one of the most intriguing heros I've seen yet. The supporting cast is lovable and interesting, and, in some respects, hilarious. The action and mystery are everywhere; yet, at the same time, it's the kind of novel that makes the reader stop and think about what really matters. Great mystery, solid Southern fiction too, and one terrific primer on law school. Any reader looking for something beyond the typical page-turner should get this one right away.

My husband is an University of Alabama Law graduate and naturally added (this) yet another book to his collection when we stopped at Priesters on our way to the beach. I pitched it in the back seat and only on a moment of boredom did I pick it up to read. OMG!!! LAW SCHOOL is a fabulous read!! It is riveting from beginning to end. Ellis' development of characters is excellent. His depiction of law studies and the focus it requires is cleverly portrayed without bogging down the non-lawyer reader. Ellis captures the drive for truth and the sacrifice to gain it. I was really impressed and would quickly pick up another Ellis novel to read.

I recently finished this novel after my brother gave it to me as a gift. He really liked it, so I gave it a read.

Well, I just loved it! The author did a splendid job of both story and character development, and I quickly fell in love with main characters HR and Seth. Plus, reading about all of the old stomping ground places of my days as a Southerner and being reminded of various iconic southern style expressions and images was an unexpected pleasure. It brought back sweet feelings for my beloved Southern roots. There's so much to make the reader stop and think here, lots of big and important themes, and it even subtly weaves in a few religious overtones.

This author's talent is obvious. Not only is he an accomplished story teller, but, he's apparently a skilled researcher as well. I can only imagine how much investigation was required to create such a real world mystery. This guy knows about everything from guns to girls, from classical music to college band rock, from campus politics to the foibles of local law enforcement . . . and it's all interesting and entertaining! Then, there's all this detail about different dishes, different coffees, and different kinds of booze.

I adored all the positive characters: there's a big black cop with a big black gun that certainly got my respect, a girl-next-door who every guy and gal just has to love, and a French chef who's always up to some form of mischief--culinary of otherwise. The portrayal of personalities--particularly Seth, HR, and private eye Hugo Black--was simply outstanding. I felt I really knew all of them! The negative characters left me intrigued and frightened, just as they should.

In short, LAW SCHOOL is a big mystery with big characters and big themes, but no shortage of little details to pin the reader to every single paragraph. I read it in just a few days.

"Law School" has a smart, youthful vibe, pitting young turks against the older, "wiser" folks in power positions who are not using the power for good. Readers aren't sure who is on the side of right and good and that guessing game keeps the novel moving right to the end.

You will grow to love the main characters right away. If you were raised in the South, you will recognize much of the better parts of chivalry, self-sacrifice, and strong moral fiber in the male characters. These characteristics have been prized in this part of the country for all the right reasons but rarely captured in contemporary fiction. It is a lovely view of the internal workings of Southern male characters who are not stereotypical good-ole boys.

For those who may get tics from some editing misses, take your muscle relaxers and enjoy. Mr. Ellis has done a masterful job with his story. It doesn't hurt a bit that his book sales benefit charities either.

Looking forward to the next one!

I downloaded "Law School" and read it last week while on vacation. It is riveting. I could not put it down. I had no idea Hense Ellis is such a great creative writer. I found his style of writing to be intriguing. He really knows how to turn a descriptive phrase. The plot kept me on my toes right up until the very end. Congratulations on a job well done. I am going to recommend to all my friends. Our firm sends out a newsletter via email and I will feature it in one of the upcoming issues. Please don't stop writing. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book. And by the way, this is the first time I have ever written a review!
