Excellent...for what it covers,
This review is from: The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Second Edition (Examples & Explanations Series) (Paperback)
As many of the previous reviewers note, this text is not as good as Glannon's E&E Civ Pro text. While this is true, it is a little misleading to just leave it at that.
The text is excellent, for the tort law that Glannon chooses to cover. The book is mainly about negligence, and Glannon does a fine job covering such a broad topic. The only problem is that, under the intentional torts, Glannon only covers assault, battery. As for defenses to intentional torts: self-defense, and consent. That is way this one is not as good as the others. The title of the book should read: "The Selected Law of Torts." So don't be misled. This is not your end-all be-all of torts supplements. But, if your having problems with negligence, or causation, this is a fantastic reference. The examples do a great job of slowly working you though those ever so important distinctions. If the title of the book let the reader know that this book is mainly about negligence, then I would have given it 5 stars for sure. Hope this helps.

BE CAREFUL WHICH EDITION YOU BUY!,

The book is great as it is, no doubt, but the older editions do not have Products Liability in them, which is VITAL to your studies. Make sure you get the latest edition, which has two chapters on PL.
Aside from that one missing element in the older edition, the rest of the book is excellent.

3rd Edition = awesome.,
This review is from: The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Third Edition (Paperback)
For some reason I think Amazon's reviews bleed through different editions.
IE. You will find reviews of the 1st/2nd edition on the 3rd editions page. This often misleads and/or distorts the promotion of a product. The newest editions of examples & explanations are fabulous and settle a few issues that may have been present in the past. All to often students expect these to be comprehensive outlines like Emanuels that do all the work for them---no. The grades come to those who work and that is where this series shines. It gives you practice and furthers understanding.

Generally, the Examples and Explanations series are thorough and helpful. However, this particular book falls short. There are 7 intentional torts; yet, this book only covers assault and battery. Additionally, only 2 privileges are covered -- self-defense and consent. I didn't bother looking at how the book covered negligence. Unless your Torts I class provides a survey of the material, especially the intentional torts, do NOT buy this book if you want extensive treatment of torts concepts.

AVOID THIS TREATISE,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Second Edition (Examples & Explanations Series) (Paperback)
I strongly recommend against buying this book. A lot of the material covered in a first year Torts class is not covered in this book; a few examples are false imprisonment, defamation, and invasion of privacy. In addition, this book has MISTAKES in it regarding the law; one example is it does not specify the standard of care owed by a physician in a medical malpractice case correctly. Of course it does not even have a separate section dealing with duty owed by professionals...Instead of this book, I would strongly recommend Understanding Torts by Diamond (Lexis) or the Law of Torts by Dobbs (West).

I actually purchased this for help with my classes, but found even though it had some basic information, the best use was not for daily reading and case briefing, but for exams. There are a few pages in each chapter of basic topic description and then the rest of the chapter has example essay type questions you can use to practice before midterms or finals. You then get explanations to go along with those sample questions that let you know if you're on the right track. If you need help for daily reading, this isn't going to help, but if you are worried about exams, this is the book for you.

A Helpful Supplement,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Second Edition (Examples & Explanations Series) (Paperback)
This Glannon book is not as fabulous as his Civil Procedure Examples and Explanations. Nonetheless, it is a good purchase. I found it neccessary to also purchase a commercial outline. The best sections in this book are those on intentional torts and affirmative defenses to them. The chapters on proximate causation and the "zone of danger" put into focus many concepts that a commercial outline or class discussion alone cannot. I also found the chapter on writing a good torts exam to be quite useful. Overall, a worthwhile purchase.

Very good, but could use improvement,
This review is from: The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Second Edition (Examples & Explanations Series) (Paperback)
This book does a very good job of covering intentional torts and the law of negligence. The section in the newest edition on exam writing is also very good. It could, however, include a chapter or two on products liability and other torts typically covered in first-year torts i.e. defamation, misrepresentation etc. I recommend, but not as highly as I'd recommend Glannon on Civil Procedure.

Too basic to be helpful,

This review is from: The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Second Edition (Examples & Explanations Series) (Paperback)
This book is too basic and only covers a small part of the first-year Torts course. Don't rely on this to help much for the exam! I would recommend finding something with more detail on Negligence and Products Liability.

I love these Examples & Explanations books. The rules make sense when you can get decent examples, and these books do a good job of that.
If you find your outline frustrating (Like Emmanuels and/or Gilberts - both of which drive me nuts with frustration) try the Finals series books. I like them much better as outlines than the "official outlines." |
