Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Twenty-five tracks recorded by Price, a New Orleans R&B singer/songwriter and rock 'n' roll pioneer, between 1952 and 1956 for Specialty make up this irregular compilation. The best songs are the chart hit "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" and six more that sport a productive little big band led by trumpeter Dave Bartholomew. (Fats Domino plays piano on four of these.) Many of the other selections are displeasing due to Price's uncertain singing and/or sloppy musicianship. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential alblum for any 50's R&B fan., June 12, 2003

This review is from: Lawdy! (+ Bonus Tracks) (Audio CD)
I have yet to find ANY artist that recorded on the Specialty label that I don't like. Lloyd Price of course, is no exception. This one is worth picking up if you're wanting to get a taste of that 50's R&B sound. Full of false starts and breakdown chatter adds to the *real* feeling of this alblum. This is Rockin' blues at its best! Buy it! I also recommend the 2nd volume as a follow up to this alblum. You really can't go wrong with any of the Legends of Specialty series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect example of classic New Orleans r'n'b,, June 11, 2007
This review is from: Lawdy! (+ Bonus Tracks) (Audio CD)
You can't go wrong with "The Legends of Specialty" series, and this is no exception. Lloyd Price was a great talent and songwriter in the early '50's. I feel that he was somewhat overlooked even at the time.
This is an excellent collection of songs and I recommend it along with Lloyd Price's companion CD, "Heavy Dreams, Vol.2", also in the Specialty series.
I'm not sure, but I have heard that it was Fats Domino on piano in these sessions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prime Early Price, October 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lawdy! (+ Bonus Tracks) (Audio CD)
A great collection of Price's early recordings, when he was tearing up the R'n'B charts, but before his slightly slicker work tore up the pop charts, as well. All manner of wonderful honking and shouting here, with Price at his most elemental, while still loaded with hooks and melodies. Simply put: if you even remotely think this is something for you, it IS something for you. If you know Price only from later hits like "Personality" and "Lady Luck," this will please your soul and make your heart race. Life-affirming music.
