Editorial Reviews

LAWLESS is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel “The Wettest County In The World,” the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave.

I won't paraphrase the storyline as others have done here so well. I will add that the moment
I hit play on the BD Player, I was so engrosed in the film I realized I was still sitting
on the edge of my seat after the first 20 minutes before I made myself comfortable, and never once hit pause.

I was riveted by Tom Hardy's acting, his portrayal was an original. It did not rely on a particular accent, clothing, make-up, mental defect or resemblance to a historical figure. He created an intelligent backwoods bootlegger, who despite his profession and its violence, lived by a code so strong that he appeared invincible. The glimpses of his tenderness he allowed himself were profoundly felt. The film was satisfying in its cinematography, cast, and story.

I really enjoyed this movie despite the reviews at the time it came out.

Ignore any online reviews by the so called media reviewers because this
movie is well worth it.

I enjoyed it so much I bought some books here at amazon regarding this slice of history
of alcohol prohibition in America.

The acting was superb.

It shows the rampant corruption among politicians and the police forces and shows the story of one family (3 brothers)
who refused to pay the currupt politicians who had the police do their dirty work.

Rent it ..it's a 4 star movie.

"Lawless" was one of the movies that I most looked forward to this year! A period piece about the outlaw Bondurant family of Virginia, the movie has gritty action set in the time of Prohibition. What's not to love? It also features an incredible A-list cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, and Mia Wasikowska. An impressive collection! It was also written by the eternally cool Nick Cave inspired by the fantastic biography "The Wettest County in the World." On paper, this had the potential to be one of the best film's of the year. And yet, something never really connected with me about "Lawless." It's a well made film, to be sure, but the story and its characters just didn't come alive enough to separate this from other Prohibition era dramas that have preceded it. I felt like I'd seen this tale many times before, and oftentimes with more depth. "Lawless" may still be worth seeing (especially for the cast), it just never felt particularly special to me. And that was a huge let-down.

LaBeouf, Hardy, and Jason Clarke play the Bondurant brothers. As local bootleggers, they developed into regional legends. Deemed indestructible, they ruled the roost in Franklin County. But situations started to turn tense as the corrupt officials (fronted by an oily Pearce) wanted to get in on the profits. The Bondurants, led by a scary Hardy, were not one to bend and a battle of wills ensue. The youngest brother (LaBeouf) attempts to take a larger role and enlists the aid of a notorious gangster (Oldman) to keep the family in power. The movie is structured as a series of escalating confrontations and the violence is well orchestrated and choreographed.

This movie was pretty good. It was very violent and kind of predictable, but a good shoot'em up movie. You'll recognize most of the actors.

Should be 4.5 Stars

Based on the true story of three bootlegging brothers in 1931 Virginia, the film has Actors such as
Transformers star Shia Labour, British actor Tom Hardy and Australian Jason Clarke and these make up Bondurant brothers, who are moonshiners in Franklin County trying to protect their booming illegal `still' operation from a less, than what appears to be, a puritanical clampdown fronted by a Special Deputy named Rakes, a part played with a memorable fury and pristine dandy like Guy Pearce, I might add his acting steals the film.

There are spurts of blood, gangsters and corrupt cops; Lawless does not quite hit the mark and succeed at building convincing portraits of its characters, within the narrative.
The art department have made a convincing period mocking and have added heaps of battered vintage signage and other pieces which add to the colour and smells of the prohibition days. The official sound track is done rather well and is laden with folksy bluegrass songs; please see my separate review of the OST.

Lawless does take its time to the `meat of the movie', after an hour or so, when Jack Bondurant ( played by Shia Lebeouf's ) starts selling liquor to gangster Floyd Banner (played by Gary Oldman, his role is brief) With the beginning of this new partnership the law, both local and state, squeezes in on the brothers.
