Nick Cave reads from "The Death of Bunny Munro"

Biography

Maybe there’s just a feeling something is missing. It’s hard to pin down, difficult to articulate; a matter of lying in bed at night, kept awake by a mysterious yearning for more Wallace Stevens quotes set to low-down combustible grooves. Maybe it’s a sudden desire to hear words like “myxamatoid” and “spraddle” deployed in popular music instead of the ... Read more in Amazon's Nick Cave Store

Editorial Reviews

Original soundtrack to the 2012 motion picture. The Lawless soundtrack includes original songs written by Nick Cave for the movie and performances by Country legends Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris along with Grammy Award winner Ralph Stanley (O Brother, Where Art Thou) and Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age. Best known for his work as a frontman of the critically acclaimed rock band, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Nick Cave, along with fellow Bad Seed Warren Ellis, composed the soundtracks for The Proposition, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and The Road.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could this be this year's "O Brother" Soundtrack? August 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This new soundtrack (from the film that Nick Cave co-wrote the screenplay for) has Producer Hal Willner's "signature" all over it. Anyone who knows Willer's other projects know he uses diverse musicians and often repeats songs with different arrangements. That's the case here with the new Nick Cave/ Warren Ellis song "Fire in The Blood" performed THREE times - twice by their band (called The Bootleggers for this album - sort of like The Soggy Mountain Boys in "O Brother") with Emmylou Harris and again by Ralph Stanley (also on O Brother) .

The 41-minute album contains a "bonus track" - a previously unreleased song (not in the film) by Willie Nelson.

This is definitely a "crossover" album which will appeal to rock fans as well as "Americana" lovers. And, surprisingly, it is on Sony's CLASSICAL label. (Go Figure.).

I haven't seen the film - it just opened - but the Soundtrack stands on it's own.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cave & Ellis do it again. August 28, 2012
By Ink
Format:Audio CD
Don't let that one star review mislead you, he's just slightly misinformed. While he is correct in Cave only singing on 2 tracks he wrote the handful of originals and both him and Ellis composed the arrangements for the traditionals and covers included on the disc. The band listed as The Bootleggers are actually Cave, Ellis and a few others from their own inner circle of musicians. I haven't seen the film yet but from what I've read there are quite a few tracks and arrangements missing, it does bother me knowing that I may not have everything they created for the film, I really can't complain about what was included on the disc. Both of the tracks that Mark Lanegan guests on are phenomenal. Ralph's take on Fire & Brimstone is haunting and Emmylou sounds great. I've had this on repeat all day and can see it making its way into regular rotation in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Americana Roots Run Deep Here September 3, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Spent the morning at the movies watching the new release "Lawless". While the film was pretty good the soundtrack was just outstanding. I stayed to read the credits and was surprised to see just how much of this is Nick Cave's work whether as a performer with The Bootleggers or as a songwriter (Nick also wrote the screenplay for the film). I was looking specifically to see if there was a soundtrack available and did not see any mention of it in the credits. I'm pleased to see this is indeed available and eagerly await it's arrival.

4.0 out of 5 stars unbelievable! November 27, 2012
By Patman
Format:Audio CD
My hat's off to ANYONE who could talk Ralph Stanley into singing "White Light/White Heat"... or maybe they just told him the song is about moonshine.

I wonder if he has even heard of the Velvet Underground or Lou Reed?

In any case, what a phenomenal soundtrack this is. Wow. Nick Cave, Emmy Lou, Ralph Stanley??? Holy Crap.

Just fit the movie perfectly. I heard this watching the movie. Have NOT heard it without a movie to go along! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Cave & Warren Ellis are masters August 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I've been anticipating this movie and soundtrack since I heard that Nick Cave was writing the screenplay four years ago. It does not disappoint! It was a nice surprise to hear some bluegrass icons, but even better to hear them in the cacophonous, rambling style that is clearly and unmistakably Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Burnin' Hell carries the album, and End Crawl reminds me of their music for The Road and The Proposition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some nice bluegrass music August 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD
A nice soundtrack overall. I am disappointed that they did not include "Do Not I Love Thee" from the Amish church service.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Film Score September 21, 2012
By Alex
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Though it does not reach the heights of O' Brother Where Art Thou, this film scores mix of bluegrass makes for a great album. And its all about white lightning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laden with folksy bluegrass songs December 18, 2013
By Sussman
Format:Audio CD
I found this sound track to very good and it fitted in well with movie giving a very thematic feel; it is laden with folksy bluegrass songs. For those Nick Cave fans there is to be found only two songs where Cave is singing, that said he wrote a handful of the original material for the film. The band listed as The Bootleggers are actually Nick Cave, and some musician friends. There is also a bonus track by Willie Nelson, which was not included in the film. Please note that there some music elements which were in the movie, but have for some unknown reason, have been left out of this OST which is a real pity.
