I read the other reviews. This mower doesn't have a 2 cycle engine or a bag. Those reviews are about different models. Also, shipping damage doesn't mean the mower is bad.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lawn Boy, not what it used to be...., June 27, 2004
This review is from: Lawn Boy 6.5 HP Self Propelled Walk Power Mower 10356 (Lawn & Patio)
Bought a Silver Pro 2003. Engine began surging 4 months after. Fixed by disasembling and cleaning carb.

Talked to many shops... all admitted the lawn boys run lean and surge as a result. Any amount of dirt in gas will lean out mixture even more. Result is disassembly and clean as necessary. Very bad in long run for 2 stroke engine - it gets its lube from the pre-mixed gas - lean mixture will result in poor lube and premature engine failure.

My options:
1. re-jet the carb by drilling oversize orifices (about 1% to 2%) using "numbered drills" and reset the speed governor (tighten spring by "one notch" (will be talking to shops about this), or
2. sell the mower and get a good 4 stroke like Honda, Husqvarna, or Toro.

BTW, called lawn boy, like talking to robots. More info from shops and people in the trade, despite flashy lawn boy website. Suggestion for lawn boy: design a carb that has built-in clearing needles (that be pushed through FROM the outside of the carb, to clear the jets instead of disassembly. Could not get that message across the "person" I spoke with.

Finally, damp grass plugs up the exhaust chute real easy.

I can NOT recommed lawn boy 2 strokers (or else you will be doing what I'm doing). And the 4 strokers that are out there beat the lawn boy. Lawn boy is not what it used to be...

Good Luck with your choices, hope this helps. Hope lawn boy listens...

1.0 out of 5 stars Unusable, poor service, March 29, 2004

The mower arrived with its handle bent so much the mower could not be assembled. Amazon said it was not their problem, "take it up with Lawn-Boy", who said take it up with their local agent, who said take it up with UPS! Lawn Boy say they can't send us a new handle, we have to get it from their agent, who say they'll charge us for it. Lawn Boy say we'll be reimbursed for the charge if we write to them, but I have my doubts. Everybody says "thanks for the money, go away" and we have a lawn mower that won't work.

2.0 out of 5 stars mechanic s look, May 22, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Lawn Boy 6.5 HP Self Propelled Walk Power Mower 10356 (Lawn & Patio)
As a son of a mechanic and a mechanic my self I find good points and bad points about the lawn boy mower that I now own. My dad is now retired, so that puts me in my mid 40s. A person could say that I have some knowledge to support my statements. My statements about the Lawn Boy mower is good and bad.
The good, when it is running it runs well it starts easly and bags the dry clipings good. The bag is easy to empty. I would think about getting another if it was not for the points that are negitive.
The bad, the clipings plug up the tube going to the bag when the bag gets full and I have to reach into the tube and clear it. Some times Ihave to clear the tube from the bottom, which means I must put my hand under the mower where the blade is. I other other trouble with the mower is the magneto pickup burns out. This is the second lawn boy and both have burned out the spark producing part. Both mowers were just two years old. The part is about $35 dollars and take me about 15 min to install but I think the repair shop wants to eat ribeye for the whole shop on my account. I do not let young people use my mower from the danger of clearing the tube, and the continued use of a bad part makes this mechanic look for a better quality for the 300 dollars asked for this product.
Over all the mower cuts as good as the murry, but I owned a cheap murry for eleven years with one repair to the handles.

I read the other reviews. This mower doesn't have a 2 cycle engine or a bag. Those reviews are about different models. Also, shipping damage doesn't mean the mower is bad.

I've had the mower for a short time and have been very happy with it. It starts on one pull, has good power, and the drive system works smoothly. Lawn Boy calls it a variable speed but really it is a one speed with a clutch that can slip. Holding the drive bar all the way up engages the drive; letting up a little allows the clutch to slip for a slower speed. It works well. If you don't bag clippings, mulching is the way to go...no bag or chute to mess with and no clippings to dispose of. The mower can also side discharge by switching the insert on the mower deck. That's why I said everything you need (good mowing with a useable drive system)and nothing you don't (bagging and complicated drive system). Combine that with a good price and the 10356 starts to look like a winner. I can't speak to its longevity yet but my other Tecumseh engine (Murray lawn tractor) has been going 15 years.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't start this green machine, April 19, 2005
This review is from: Lawn Boy 6.5 HP Self Propelled Walk Power Mower 10356 (Lawn & Patio)
I just spent the last 3-4 hours trying to start my new Lawn Boy out of the box...Still not started. The blade was hitting the side of the mower and would not turn. Now it just spins with nothing happening. I read the manuals over and over to no avail. The web site says " pull the string then if it doesn't start call for service". I called the help line and they said take it to a local dealer ? This was an expensive lawnmower for me to purchase and it has been all day and my grass is not cut with now idea when I will get it back. The dealer near my house is only 5 miles away but he has about 500 mowers to be serviced in front of mine. Needless to say this whole purchase has been a big mistake. Buying my next large item in a store not online. Also the UPS driver needed me to help him carry it into my yard and it looked like someone had dropped the box several times but not enough to refuse delivery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be shy about refusing delivery, July 19, 2004
This review is from: Lawn Boy 6.5 HP Self Propelled Walk Power Mower 10356 (Lawn & Patio)
I got my lawnboy delivered within a week and it was a matter of flipping the handles up and filling with gas and oil. I saved over a hundred dollars buying it online. I have had 3 previous lawnboys. The old one is still my backup mower. What people need to remember about ordering online is don't be afraid to refuse delivery if the box even looks damaged. UPS will leave ANYTHING on your doorstep. Don't be shy about telling UPS that you are refusing delivery and make them come back to your house to pick it up. None of this drive over to one of their centers.
Complain loud enough or threaten to send an email. They will pick it up. Tell the supplier to ship another. Problem solved.

Have used it now for about 4 years and its still running great. 1 pull to start. Lawnboy was always my favorite. Love the Green. The self propelled part is a little slower than I would like. You can go as slow as you like but not all that fast. Great machine. Free shipping! Yea!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Mower but never factory checked- failed out of box, June 7, 2004
By
Ron Phillips (TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lawn Boy 6.5 HP Self Propelled Walk Power Mower 10356 (Lawn & Patio)
Mower arrived in average condition (at least compared to other reviews). I was all prepared to put it together, but wouldn't you know it, it was fully assembled. Just raise the handle, set wheel height and add oil and gas(the oil and gas are separate now). Now for the fun part, the mower wouldn't start because the mower blade was hitting on a black piece of plastic under the deck. I don't know the purpose of this piece but it is riveted in and per the manual is part of the mower. I filed enough off to allow the blade to make it by. No more problems. I would recommend buying one from the store, as your on your own if you buy on line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lawnmower!, June 8, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Lawn Boy 6.5 HP Self Propelled Walk Power Mower 10356 (Lawn & Patio)
I've read the other reviews, I was surprised to see so many problems.

I purchased this lawnmower from Amazon.com last August (2003)

It was delivered to my door via UPS. I opened the box and inspected it last August, but did not use it until today. 6/7/04. (I had it stored in my garage.)

I pulled it out of the box, put the oil and gasoline in, it started on the first try. It runs fine. I had no problems whatsoever.

I figured I'd share the positive review about this product.

I don't know if I just got lucky, or if the other reviewers were just unlucky.
