The Band is On! (plus a setlist), July 5, 2008
This review is from: Lawn at White River Park: Indianapolis in 7/15/06 (Audio CD)
I just started listening to this a few days ago, and to me it's one of the strongest shows in this very strong series. It starts strong and stays strong throughout, with every song good and many renditions outstanding. Probably because the show was late in the tour, and they don't have either of the big headliners from earlier in the tour with them (Scofield, Anastasio) the band plays as a particularly cohesive ensemble, as if they'd been playing together for years. One of the nicest things to me is that Greg Orsby is particularly strong when he takes the lead, playing more melodically, even lyrically, than in earlier shows. I've raved about all the other players in other reviews, so I don't want to repeat that here; suffice it to say that all are up to par, and their interplay is particularly strong.
The setlist is strong on traditional Dead songs (in contrast to the Chicago show, which is outstanding for some of the innovative material they bring out and nail). Since Amazon doesn't provide a setlist here, here it is:
Jam
Dire Wolf
Big River
Fennario
Let it Ride
Bertha
Next Time You See Me
Viola Lee Blues
Playin' in the Band >
Scarlet Begonias >
Fire on the Mountain
Shakedown Street >
He's Gone >
Jam >
Gimme Shelter
Stella Blue (Part I) >
Stella Blue (Instrumental Break) >
Stella Blue (Part II)
Truckin'
Jam
Playin' in the Band (Reprise)
Attics of my Life
To my ears, all of these numbers are terrific, but the high points to me are Big River, Let it Ride, Next Time You See Me, Playin' in the Band, Fire on the Mountain, Shakedown Street, He's Gone, Gimme Shelter, Truckin'. Enjoy!
