1.0 out of 5 stars Biggest Hits By Whose Definition? November 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I just panned the set from Madacy on Lawrence Welk for its use of the term "best of" in the title and then giving us just 30 tracks on three discs and only three of which were bona-fide hit singles for this genial big band leader from Strasburg, North Dakota (March 11, 1903 - May 17, 1992). Especially considering the fact he had 42 such hits from 1938 to 1970!

Now, some will take issue with my criticism because, in their mind, "best of" doesn't necessarily mean a national hit single. We can argue that point until the cows come home, but the fact is, ANY artist worth his or her salt in the days of the 78- and then 45-rpm single would have given their eye-teeth for a hit record - one that generated sales and resulted in air- and juke-box-play to the point that it earned a spot on the national charts. And, I might add, their labels were also looking for hits purely from a profit point of view.

But in this instance, MCA uses the title Lawrence Welk Biggest Hits, and then provides just 10 tracks with only ONE ever achieving hit status! And that one, Bubbles In The Wine (which became his theme song), first made it to a modest # 13 in May 1939 on Vocalion 4368. None of the other nine were ever national hits for his various bands, and even Bubbles In The Wine was recorded time and again over the years (e.g., in 1952 on Coral 60689 as by Lawrence Welk & His Champagne Music but did not chart). Without a discography or liner notes we are left to guess which version is the one included. As for I Could Have Danced All Night, that was the uncharted B-side to the minor # 96 single On The Street Where You Live with vocal by Larry Deane. And THAT'S one of his "biggest hits??" Please!
