I am a huge fan of Beverly Jenkins and love the personal brand she had placed on historical African-American fiction. Piper Huguley is blazing her own trail into this genre. The Lawyer's Luck is a fast-paced and well-written novel. The dialogue and speech patterns of both Realie and Lawrence are spot-on. The inspirational and religious aspects of the novel are not forced or preachy; but, instead the faith of both main characters is realistic and, therefore, add depth and value to the plot. I'm waiting anxiously for the next installment of this new series.

Novellas can be tricky to read--a lot of times the story seems too big, and leaves you wishing the author had written a full-length novel. The Lawyer's Luck is one of those rare novellas that delivers a satisfying story in under 100 pages.

One thing that astounded me was the prose. Told from the perspective of Realie, a runaway slave, and Lawrence, a lawyer, Huguley captures the syntax of two such disparate people, which deepens the characterization. I really loved it. I also enjoyed the ironies of slavery, freedom, North vs South, race relations, feminism, and personal identity Huguley included. There are no absolutes when it comes to any of those elements--Huguley doesn't shy away from the intersectionality of this time, yet manages to still give Realie and Lawrence a beautiful romance.

The Christian elements are another fantastic layer to the story, and it definitely doesn't feel like 20th & 21st century notions of the faith were tacked onto the past (an issue I have with a lot of Inspirational Historical Romance). So for interested readers who typically shy away from IHR, this is the story of two people who try their best to keep the faith in spite of the injustices and prejudices of their time.

I can't wait for the full length novel in this series!

The Lawyer's Luck is a great prequel. I enjoyed the fast paced, realistic view of Lawrence and Realie. I love their contrasts, their differences, and even the things they shared in common. The story peels back the veil of the slavery and brings it into all of us multi-faceted categories. Realie has a hard time trusting anyone and her stubborn will to do whatever she can to get to freedom shines through. Lawrence is perfect as a man who walks two worlds and is apart from slavery but still affected by its discrimination. I enjoyed the complex relationship between the Milfords as well and can't wait for the next book. This was an enjoyable read from an author I know will make her mark.

LOVE this prequel novella. Realie and Lawrence meet under less than auspicious circumstances (she tried to steal his horse, he shot her). But as they each let go of their preconceived notions about the other, love begins to bloom.

This is an introduction to Piper Huguley's new Home to Milford College series and now I can't wait for the first real novel!

Piper Huguley's voice drew me into the story like a bee to pollen, the setting and characters alive with rich intensity. The attraction between Lawrence and Realie is present early on and believable. The couple (worlds apart in education and background) are surprised when their feelings grow, yet the inevitable conclusion felt rushed, especially on Realie's part as we see less of her emotional progression. Such is often the case with novellas because of the length restrictions. Ms. Huguley's prequel entices the reader to learn more about her Milford College characters, so I think I'll continue my journey with The Preacher's Promise.

This is a new author to me but definitely not for long. I was very impressed with this story, and it's far from my usual reads. I've recently become a fan of historical romance after coming across a Beverly Jenkins novel. This was not as fact based historically like past books I've read but more time period based (if that makes sense). I really enjoyed the story between Lawyer and Realie. It was sweet, funny, exciting, touching and full even though it's a novella (the last 20% of the book is the beginning of the next story). I love steam in a book and that would have been my only gripe (not one bit of heat), but besides that I loved it, so much so that heat or not, I'm about to download the next book. Fantastic read and I can't wait to see what Amanda and Virgil are about to get into.

The Lawyer's Luck, by Piper Huguley, is a well-crafted historical fiction romance that is a prequel novella. It has just the right balance of character development and plotline to fit its shortened form. I thoroughly enjoyed the 'opposites attract' interaction between Lawrence, a soon-to-be lawyer and Aurelia (Realie), an escaped slave who meet when she attempts to steal his horse and use it to get to Canada. After their initial encounter, there is a constant clash between their personalities, their differences in religious beliefs, and even how to interact with the horse they are forced to share. Thanks to Piper's amazing ability to skillfully blend both the romance and historical fiction genres into the short story, the reader doesn't feel that it was rushed or incomplete. I highly recommend this novella, and look forward to reading more from Piper Huguley, especially its sequel, The Preacher's Promise.
