Book Description

April 15, 2010
This book explores the question: What if lawyers were peacemakers, problem-solvers and healers of conflicts?

Lawyers as Peacemakers can teach lawyers new ways of finding satisfaction in law practice and to provide comprehensive, solution-focused services to clients. Sometimes it's not about winning a battle, it's about finding the best possible answer for everyone involved.

Law practice can focus on a more holistic, humanistic, solution-based approach to resolving legal problems, an approach that many clients want and need.

More About the Author

A zealous advocate for a new paradigm of law practice, J. Kim Wright wears a lot of hats, among them: lawyer, author, editor, coach, consultant, teacher, and trainer.

A graduate of the University of Florida Levin College of Law, she was originally licensed as a lawyer in 1989. She has been a member of the North Carolina Bar since 1994.

In November of 2009, the ABA named Kim as one of the Legal Rebels who are "finding new ways to practice law, represent their clients, adjudicate cases and train the next generation of lawyers." The ABA also invited Kim to write a book and in April, 2010, Lawyers as Peacemakers, Practicing Holistic, Problem-Solving Law was published. It was named one of the ABA's Flagship Series and was on the ABA best-seller list for seven months.

Kim is the publisher and managing editor of www.cuttingedgelaw.com, a resource and community for the integrative law movement. Documenting, supporting and showcasing a community of leaders in the movement, the site contains over 350 video clips of pioneers, tracking the history and development of the growth of the approaches which make up the movement. It offers information and role models for lawyers, judges, and law students who are seeking healthier, more conscious and values-based ways of practicing law.

In her law and consulting practice, Kim works with business leaders who wish to align their corporate values with their legal documents. She coaches lawyers and consults with law schools, courts, communities and law firms about creating fulfilling practices that are based upon the values of the principals. She is a member of the executive committee of the American Bar Association Legal Education ADR and Practical Problem-Solving Skills task force.

Location independent since early 2008, Kim travels around the world as an advocate for the integrative law movement. She has been a guest lecturer at law schools on three continents and has taught Integrative Law at two law schools as an adjunct and ADR, Business Law and Restorative Justice as adjunct faculty at three colleges. She has planned and spoken at dozens of conferences and leads programs on collaboration, civility for litigators, restorative justice, working with victims and offenders, skills-based courses on conflict and communication, career and quality of life issues, holistic law, and several other topics. 5.0 out of 5 stars What being a lawyer is really about May 17, 2011
Format:Paperback
In Lawyers as Peacemakers, Kim uses her gifts of collection and connection to create and display a showcase of what being a lawyer is really about. For those that thought law school would be a great way to make a difference in the world but came out the other side unsure of how a J.D. really helps, this book is a must-read. For those who struggle to "balance" their fractured personal and professional selves, this book is a must-read. Kim has created a compendium, a hands-on guide, and, most importantly, a voice of acceptance for holistic law.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lawyers as Peacemakers a MUST read! June 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
Wright's Lawyers as Peacemakers is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, providing a wealth of ideas for everyone in ANY profession who yearns for a better, more compassionate world. Although this book targets the legal profession, everyone can understand it and apply the ideas to his or her own profession and personal life. Wright explains the essence of therapeutic jurisprudence, which is practicing law with the purpose of restoring and maintaining the well being of all the people involved, including the clients, the victims, the offenders, the lawyers, and the community. This book is NOT fluffy idealism. It provides very practical and doable solutions and techniques for problem solving and conflict resolution. It shows how we can all relate to each other in compassionate ways rather than adversarial. It explains the benefits of this approach, which in most situations enormously outweigh the benefits of the traditional win-lose adversarial approach. Wright does not preach. She shows exactly how a win-win outcome is accomplished. She has done her homework and reveals that this approach to doing business can actually be much more financially profitable than the traditional win-lose approach, in addition to improving the emotional and physical well being of all the people involved. It is one thing to say we should all care about each other, and another altogether to explain how to do it. Wright does the latter.
