Book Description

September 24, 2010
The sound of something being dragged grew louder. ... The window in the parlor was broken, leaving a gaping hole in the room like an open mouth. The night air was still warm, and the breeze came through, bringing with it a foul odor. He drew back. The smell crept across his skin, into his mouth, contaminating him with the scent of death.

The stars were out, and moonlight filtered through the window. The form moved slowly. Square shoulders made thin, angular lines against the shadows, the hat concealing the features of the face. As the figure moved, it dragged across the floor a small, jumbled shape; dust rose from it. He could smell the earthiness of fur...his mind would not accept what his senses shaped before him.

The Dead Shall Walk. The Dead Shall Speak.

It's 1869.  In the town of Lazarus, California, the dead don't stay that way.

Luella Pembry comes to town with a secret, and a device. She offers the Sheriff and the Mayor of the town a proposition - give me my own land to build on, and I will destroy the zombies that plague your town.

Sheriff Drake is skeptical at first, but willing to try anything to save his hometown. Together, Luella and Drake set out to solve the mystery behind the Risings that are occurring  in Lazarus.

Part old west fable, part ghost story, part zombie adventure, Lazarus is a thriller that grips the reader from beginning to end.

You'll find everything in this book from action, romance, mystery and horror. Lazarus is a place where the dead have a difficult time staying dead and the residents aren't quite what they seem. The main character Luella Pembry is blessed - or perhaps in some cases, cursed - with a mysterious gift which brings her to the dusty ol' town. With the assistance of a very nice Sheriff, she must race against the clock to prevent a supernatural catastrophe that threatens the town.

I enjoyed how Ms. Titus invested in her characters. She put thought into the background of each individual and allowed events to reveal how they became the people they are.

This was a nicely paced book and kept me engaged all the way through. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and recommend it to anyone. Even if you don't like zombies, you'll like the characters, the mystery and the romance that unfolds on the pages.

I just finished reading "Lazarus" by Lori Titus and was simply in awe of this fine Novella she wrote. Lazarus is a fictional tale set in the old west and filled with some memorable characters, including a healthy dose of good old fashioned, flesh eating zombies. A true page turner, the pace grabs the reader from the beginning, digging its claws into their necks and holding on tight until the surprise ending. A great read full of exhilaration, trepidation and a remarkable way of making you feel like your right there with the lead character, Luella. I was so immersed in this book I could taste the grits of sand being grinded between my teeth, the smell of gunpowder flaring up my nostrils, and I could have sworn I saw a tumble weed or two pass by underneath me. Trust me, if you like a suspenseful page turner, you will not be disappointed. Attached is a link to her book, enjoy!!

Luella Pembry can speak to the dead. Ghosts are all around her, and ask that she do their bidding. She is called to a place called Lazarus, where others have magical talents of their own, and the dead tend to rise, though this type of dead are zombies, and they seek to destroy the living.

Lazarus is a tightly written novella that immerses the reader in the old west, with a twilight zone bent to it. Its mix of magic and the grit of the old west keeps the reader intrigued page after page. Lori Titus certainly knows how to spin a tale that kept me wondering what was next. I guess it sounds trite to say, but this is a story with a little bit of something for everyone: mystery, romance, horror, adventure, a strong leading woman and man, deception, and solid, compelling characters.

I don't think I've read a story that combined ghosts and zombies and layered on top of that mysticism before. Lori does an excellent job of combining those elements and making the story flow well from start to finish. Again, this is a novella, so perhaps my only complaint is that this isn't a full fledged novel with more story to it-I would have liked to seen more of this little town in California and the people who inhabit it. So I guess the brevity of this tale isn't really a complaint at all-Lori Titus has me craving more.
