Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—Young uses short rhymes to introduce 12 familiar outside games. Each one begins with the stanza, "On lazy days of summer, I go out to play…," followed by a short poetic description of hopscotch, tag, fishing, etc. All the rhymes have seven lines and the same basic meter, which gets tiresome after a while. Some are well crafted, but a few are awkward, like this line about a three-legged race: "Do you think it'd be faster if together we'd crawl?" After each rhyme, a "Did You Know?" section gives interesting facts about the featured game. O'Malley's watercolors appear on every spread and feature children at play. The illustrations are realistic but are done from a variety of perspectives, which gives them a sense of movement and energy. Glen Vecchione's Sidewalk Games (Sterling, 2003) has a wider variety of activities (more than 40) and gives more complete instructions about how to play them.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

From Booklist

Young is clearly writing with a noble (if perhaps futile) purpose. Surrounded by video games, computers, and hi-def TVs, today's kids aren't exactly clamoring to get outside and play kick the can. But with childhood obesity mounting, it is a good idea to have old favorites like hopscotch and monkey in the middle described in one place. Overall, this is an attractive package (though a rhyme that opens each section is repetitious), and it does more than just give rules and variations. Each activity features a "Do You Know?" section, which adds several interesting pieces of information. For instance, Roman soldiers played a variation of hopscotch, and knucklebones was one of the earliest names for jacks. Not all the activities are games; making jewelry and running relay races, for example, are also discussed. Watercolor paintings that fill up the pages are generally engaging, though sometimes the kids have forced expressions on their faces. A note to parents testifies to the importance of play. But where does one find marbles these days? Ilene Cooper

More About the Author

When Judy was about ten years old, she showed her grandmother a poem she had written. Her grandmother encouraged her to keep writing and Judy has done so ever since. Judy's fiction, poetry and nonfiction children's books are used extensively in classrooms across the country and have also been honored with numerous awards and recognition. One of Judy's most cherished honor was having "R is for Rhyme, A Poetry Alphabet" performed by the Tanner Creative Dance Program and Children's Dance Theatre of the University of Utah for their 58th annual performance.

A frequent speaker at schools nationwide, Judy's author visits include both educational presentations and poetry writing workshops for elementary and middle school students. Judy also conducts writing workshops for teachers for their professional development in-services and is a frequent speaker for educational organizations and professional conferences. With twenty years previous experience in the public schools, Judy has first hand experience with improving students' writing skills and her presentations and workshops are directly related to school curriculum.

Judy resides in the country near Springfield, MO, where she writes full time. Her husband, Ross B. Young, is a professional artist. He illustrated Judy's "S is for Show Me, A Missouri Alphabet" and "Show Me the Number, A Missouri Number Book." They have a grown daughter and son, and several dogs. When not writing or speaking at schools and conferences, you can find Judy hiking, fishing, or gallivanting around the country in "Arlo," the Young's traveling studio.
