This review is from: Lazy Old Sun - Live/Life in the Lowlands (Audio CD)
Never mind the pleasant-but-safe croonings of Madeline Peyroux or Diana Krall. Fay Victor represents jazz as it should be. Not polite murmurs for your mental supper club but exhilaration, brooding, fear and hope in the face of exploring a new land, or returning to the old one. Listen to her work her magic on a tune by Sonny Rollins or The Doors, backed by a sympathetic band of Dutchmen. If you are used to cocktail backdrops being the limits of jazz, give it time to grow on you. If you are a fan of artists like Jeanne Lee, Betty Carter and Cassandra Wilson, this is something you need in your collection. Without a doubt.
