These tapes give a balanced comprehensive view of Johnson's political career and of Johnson as a man -- both the great achievements and the great disasters, the drive for social services and the hubris that kept us in Viet Nam. For those of us who lived through these times, it's a fascinating look back that gave me a clearer perspective -- and a reminder of how much the war cost us, not only in what we spent in lives and dollars, but in what we could have done had we spent the lives and dollars in wiser ways.

There can be few US politicians or world politicians, for that matter, who have had such a dominant impact upon their countries history. LBJ certainly was one such man.
This video set gives a vivid picture of who LBJ was. Certainly all the classic texts from Kearns Goodwin, Dallek Caro and Dugger all paint a picture that is well illustrated here. He could be the best of people and he could be a SOB. Thats what makes reading about LBJ so fascinating.
LBJ was a very human person. He was aggressive. He was charming. He was intimidating. He was wary. He was lacking in confidence. Yes - LBJ was a very human. And frankly thats what makes him a very appealing charachter. The videos show the way he operated. While he may not have had the polish of Kennedy he certainly outdid JFK for sheer drive and energy and...getting things on the statute book.
These videos are excellent value. They are best watched after you read a book or two on Johnson. As the previous reviwer said, this collection is very fair and certainly, in my view, should be watched by anybody who is seriously interested in modern contemporary US history.

I enjoyed the tapes very much. It is part of our American history. LBJ was an important political figure in a time of great turmoil and change, as well as, a time of great resistance to political change. He was an instrumental giant in getting much done. One does not have to be Democrat or Republican. Being an American and in understanding our political development is what is necessary.
