3.0 out of 5 stars Rather mediocre
I liked 8 or 9 of Carlene Thompsons novels. Was really disappointed with "If you ever tell" and "Since you've been gone", found both books very confusing with too many characters.
If you want to give Thompson a chance, start with "All fall down". I think it's even better than her first book "Black for Remembrance", because it creates such a great atmosphere...

Share No Secrets is a fast paced suspense that is centered around the town's hotel, La Belle Riviere. Some of the locals believe that the hotel is haunted but, can that explain all the mysterious events that seem to surround the town's grandest hotel?
After famous model, Julianna Brent's body is found by her best friend Adrienne Reynolds and Adrienne's daughter in the closed down hotel, it seems that danger isn't far behind. Adrienne is still reeling from the horrifying discovery of finding her best friend murdered when she figures out her own life may be in danger and learns that everyone has a secret. But is it too late to protect herself and keep her daughter, Skye, safe.

Carlene Thompson has created an action filled read with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end! This story is highly detailed with an array of in depth characters that are smart, funny and engaging. I felt that Ms. Thompson truly captured the feel of small town life and made you care about the characters she created.

Share No Secrets is one of the best stories this reader has picked up in a long time and I highly recommend it for anyone who's looking for a book that they can't put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars an intelligently written thriller, September 13, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love a well-written thriller. Unfortunately, many thrillers are not well-written. They tend to have two-dimensional characters who are exceptionally lacking and common sense and the writing is often riddled with grammatical errors. Often they are thinly disguised romance novels. "Share No Secrets" is a really good book: the plot is very suspenseful, the characters are well fleshed-out, and the reader really feels they are in the small town of Point Pleasant, WV. Three girls grew up together in Point Pleasant, Adrienne, Julianna, and Kit. They are grown up now: Adrienne is an widowed artist with a fourteen-year-old daughter, Julianna is a burnt-out supermodel, and Kit owns a successful restaurant. Kit's mother owns a historic grand hotel with a tragic history. Kit, who loves the hotel, has commissioned Adrienne to make a painting of the hotel before her mother has the hotel demolished because of her superstitious fear of the deaths that have occurred there over the years. But Julianna has been using the empty hotel to meet a married lover. Her dead body is discovered by Adrienne in a bed in her favorite room, surrounded by scented candles. Now Adrienne, who knows too much, is being stalked by Julianna's killer. There are many suspects in the small town. Could it be Julianna's ex-husband, her sister, a jilted lover, or even her old friend Kit? "Share No Secrets" is the first book I have read by Carlene Thompson. I will definitely be reading more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Read!, January 27, 2006
Artist Adrienne Reynolds and her daughter Skye are in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the grounds of La Belle Riviere, Point Pleasant's grandest hotel, the widowed mother and hometown girl is working on a painting. Adrienne is trying to capture the shunned hotel before the building is demolished. While she works, her dog unexpectedly chases someone into the woods, and Skye follows after the beloved pet. The unknown person gets away, but the dog eventually leads them to a gruesome discovery. Inside one of the hotel rooms, they find Adrienne's friend Julianna Brent dead. It looks as if Julianna was meeting a secret lover.

Julianna's affair is just the beginning of the secrets to be revealed. Trying to understand her friend's brutal death, Adrienne begins to delve into the hidden lives of the town's residents. It seems that almost everyone in Point Pleasant has something to hide. As her investigation progresses, strange things start happening to her. Believing she must do what she can to unlock the mystery, she puts herself and Skye in more danger. Adrienne hopes to untangle the web of deceit before it is too late.

Share No Secrets is an engaging read. With many twists and turns, it is an intricately crafted whodunit. There are many players, all whom have a shrouded, yet believable life. At times I was frustrated by the large cast of characters, but I was simply impatient. I could not identify the murderer. Whenever I thought I had it figured out, I was lead down another path with new clues. I connected with Adrienne and wanted her out of harms way. Ms. Thompson kept me guessing until the final, climatic revelation. Lovers of intelligent murder mysteries will want to pick up Share No Secrets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promising, a little dumbed down, February 15, 2007

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
After the sudden death of her husband, Adrienne Reynolds returned with her fourteen year old daughter Skye to her hometown of Point Pleasant, West Virginia (home of the book's author, not-so-incidentally) to find a little peace and serenity in the familiar. Also back in the nest is the beautiful, restless Julianna Brent, Adrienne's best friend, who had come back home to recover from her fast-paced model's life of drugs and partying. The novel opens with Julianna's vicious murder, which takes place in the town's old, abandoned grand hotel - La Belle Riviere, better known to the locals as "The Belle" - now condemned and slated for demolition, and it's Adrienne and her daughter who find Julianna's body. From there, things become more and more dangerous for Adrienne and Skye, as the killer racks up a few more murders and sends a few clear warnings to Adrienne about sticking her nose in too deeply.

Carlene Thompson is on her way to becoming the new Mary Higgins Clark, although her writing will need to be polished a little further before assuming that mantle. I've been reading her books for a few years now, and I can't help but get the impression that because she knows she has a younger audience - her books are adult mainstream, but a lot of what seem like teenagers and young women write reviews on Amazon - she's catering a little more to that crowd, and dumbing down the quality of the writing just a tiny bit. I also don't care for the "romantic suspense" genre too much, where the heroine always ends up with the love of her life, because it's just so trite and formulaic. Those are the two downsides to Thompson's novels, although neither is so glaring that I don't enjoy the stories. The ending of this one was great as far as the identity of the killer - I suspected it but I'm not one of those who gets upset if I guess who it is; I mean, you're supposed to guess - but the reason this person was the killer fell totally flat. I thought it was going to be one thing, and it turned out to be something completely different, and what I thought would have been better (lol). It was a decent read, though, and if you like Mary Higgins Clark and the like, you'll enjoy Thompson's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Entertaining Read!, March 2, 2006
By
Silver Screen (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
Despite a somewhat slow start, Share No Secrets is a mystery novel about a small town in West Virginia that is suffering from a series of murders. The lovely Julianna Brent is murdered in the town's historic old hotel and childhood best friend Adrienne Reynolds spends the duration of the book trying to solve Julianna's murder, resolve her love life, raise her teenage daughter Skye and avoid becoming a murder victim herself!
Having only recently become a reader of Ms. Thompson's, I have to admit that she continues to entertain. The story keeps you guessing and the big reveal at the end was a surprise. When I can read a mystery and not have everything figured out halfway through, I am happy. So, in my opinion, Ms. Thompson delivers.
My only complaint? The fact that some of the characters, knowing full well that there is an unidentified killer on the loose, continually go out alone in the dark or leave themseleves obviously vulnerable to the unknown killer in some other fashion. But maybe this is just standard character behavior for this type of genre.
All in all, a good read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Share No Secrets, September 30, 2005
The safe world Adrienne Reynolds thought she'd found in Point Pleasant for herself and her daughter, Skye, turns into a living nightmare when one of her best friends is brutally murdered. Julianna's shocking death sets in motion a chain of homicides, as each person who might be able to shed light on what really happened dies brutally. Wanting justice for her friend and the restoration of safety, Adrienne delves into the mystery, placing not only herself, but Skye, in the killer's sights.

**** Carlene Thompson can be relied upon to write the most intellectual of mysteries, ones that keep you guessing until the very end. An innocuous background makes the events portrayed all the more terrifying, making you believe it all could happen. ****

5.0 out of 5 stars Following the Heart, December 30, 2005
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
The grand hotel of La Belle Riviere, located in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is on the demolition block because the owner, Ellen Kirkwood feels the hotel is cursed. Too many strange occurrences have happened over the years and better to rid the town of the spooked hotel than to have another "accident" ruin another life. Adrienne Reynolds, Kit Kirkwood and Julianna Brent are best friends and literally grew up on the grounds of the hotel. As Adrienne Reynolds is sketching a portrait for Kit, in remembrance of the Belle, she and her daughter Skye stumble upon a murdered female who appears to be sleeping in one of the rooms. The corpse is none other than Julianna Brent, a former high fashion model. With the Belle closed and off limits to the public, the question becomes, "why was Julianna at the Belle?"

As the investigation proceeds, acquaintances of Adrienne and people close to her turn up either dead or assaulted, Adrienne herself is also assaulted and shot at. Only one person knows the identity of the killer but he is killed before his blackmail scheme comes to fruition. With an investigation leading to nowhere and innuendos abound, shocking revelations and secrets are revealed to the surprise of Adrienne and others.

SHARE NO SECRETS by Carlene Thompson is a rare "who done it" in the sense that the element of surprise is just that. At no time is the culprit obvious, at least not to me. The author exposes just about everyone's secrets and the possible motives to the point that you wonder if the person in question is the killer. The author's use of imagery is masterful in that every scene described is detailed, whether it is the character's gestures, tone of voice or a landmark. Her voice is fierce and skilled, utilizing wit and catty comments along with eccentric characters, which made for some laugh out loud moments. The familial pasts of the primary and numerous secondary characters help in understanding them present day and adds intriguing elements to the story line. SHARE NO SECRETS did not have an obvious, neat nor tidy ending and kept my curious mind turning. It is an interesting account of murder, mayhem and yes, love!

Me (West Virginia) - See all my reviews
I have read all of Carlene's novels, and this is by far the most interesting. The beginning may have been a bit slow, but she kept me guessing the whole way through. This is the first book of her's where I had ABSOLUTELY no idea who the killer was. Bravo, Ms. Thompson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Share No Secrets, October 3, 2005
Share No Secrets was a great read, as are all of Carlene Thompson's novels. She is my favorite mystery author. I was unable to determine the killer in this book, but that is usually the case with her novels...she has the adept ability to totally baffle readers as to "who dun it"...she leads you one way and then totally changes the course of your thinking by implicating someone else. This book was no exception. I cannot wait for her next novel to be released...Put this book on your "must read" mystery list and be sure to locate copies of her past novels as well...you will not be disappointed!
