This 5-1/2-quart French oven by Le Creuset is the most forgiving pan I've ever used. If you just happen to forget you're sautéing onions for a soup while you answer the telephone, there's no need to worry--the onions won't burn. Enameled cast iron has been recognized as one of the best materials available for cookware because it retains heat and promotes gentle, even cooking at low heat ensuring that the best flavor is brought out from the ingredients. It's perfect for use on any heat source--gas, electric, radiant, ceramic, halogen, induction, or solid fuel. There's also a tight-fitting, enameled cast-iron lid that helps seal in heat and flavor. Food will be kept hot as you bring it to the table for serving. And you will certainly want to serve out of this beautiful piece--the deep color and shiny finish will brighten any table setting. --Jane DePaolo

Product Description

For over 80 years, enameled cast iron has been the foundation of Le Creuset's product line. Each piece is formed in two sand molds which are used only once and then the sand is recycled. Once removed from the mold the piece is polished and finished by hand, and then enameled and fired twice. The unique production process yields a nonreactive cooking surface that can be used on any type of heat source, including induction and glass top, and can be used in the oven up to 375°F. Heat spreads throughout more evenly and is retained for longer, and the enameled surface requires no seasoning. Whether on the stove, in the oven or on the table, this unmistakable style, quality and durability is sure to be appreciated. Le Cruset enameled cast iron is superior quality cookware that is ready for a lifetime of everyday use and to be passed down by generations of food lovers.

Because heat is distributed slowly and evenly, almost any recipe can be prepared in this Flame 5-1/2 quart Round French Oven. The tight fitting lid creates a blanket of heat that seals in flavor and moisture while cooking in the oven or on the stove. The versatile shape makes this a go-to piece for preparing any meal and doubles as a beautiful server. This French oven is backed by a manufacturer's lifetime limited warranty.

I spent countless hours pouring over the various reviews of all the different Dutch ovens out on the market and in the end, this is the one that I ended up with. I have no regrets and this purchase only reinforces the old adage that you get what you pay for. Provided you don't do something stupid--like pouring ice cold liquids onto a blazing hot enameled surface--this pot should last a lifetime. More than I could say for the cheaper Chinese-made pots on the market. Lodge, Calphalon and Rachel Ray have got nothing on this pot.

When I first started looking at a decent enameled Dutch oven, I just wanted something to braise meats. Now that I have it, I go out of my way to find recipes that will allow me to use this pot. At first I thought it would be too small for the size meals that I often prepare for family dinner night. But it could easily hold a 6 to 8 pound roast or a small chicken. I looked a the 7-1/4 quart pot but found it to be a bit too heavy and was afraid it wouldn't fit in the cabinet. The 5-1/2 quart is the right balance of size and weight, fits conveniently in the drawer with my other cookware and it looks wonderful in the kitchen and on the dining room table.

The enameled surface is extremely durable. I have accidentally left it on high heat and scorched the surface but it cleans up just fine without any vigorous scrubbing. The light cream colored interior is perfect for seeing the color of the liquids. The handles are sized right and the lid fits tightly. It's a joy to use and if I had any complaint about it, it would be the weight.

Update:
Since I bought this pot over 5 years ago, it has gotten quite a bit of use. Unfortunately, it's also beginning to show some signs of wear.

...and my husband is getting our money's worth out of this gem. Watch the chefs on TV and you'll see it in action. Compare it to other, less expensive cookware; Le Creuset is worth the price tag. Expect everything from this oven: even cooking, miraculously easy clean-up, and I'll bet it's indestructible. It's gone from stovetop to oven, from soups and stews to spaghetti sauce. It's a good thing it's so attractive since it never gets put away. If you're a serious cook, you should own this.

This is the classic sturdy dutch oven, with the extra benefit of being enameled and non-stick on the inside. It's great to be able to cook the ingredients for a dish, and then stick it in the oven to bake without transferring it to a casserole dish. It's heavy, solid, and deep, with room for a lot of food. It conducts heat evenly across the bottom. It's also a beautiful color and looks good enough to serve from at the table. I didn't know I needed one til I got it, but now I use it at least weekly. It'll never need to be replaced, and it can be re-enameled if the surface ever becomes worn.

I absolutely love this piece of cookware. It has all of the advantages of cast iron cookware but is so much prettier.
