It appears very well made and hasn't failed me yet.

Think of it this way: it is flat for a spoon and very curved for a spatula.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love Le Creuset!

Nothing quite like a melted spatula you left in chocolate or caramel a bit too long. This one won't melt - it's very sturdy but be warned "large" means LARGE. You can't stick it into a can of evaporated milk or tomato paste very well to scrape out the sides. I'd recommend buying both small and large - trust me you'll love both.

UPDATE: At the time of this writing, the silicone is safe up to 482 degrees Fahrenheit (when I purchased, it was safe up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. You may want to check with Le Creuset or look at the Amazon specs to make sure this doesn't change again.)

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I recently received this utensil and haven't used it yet. I noticed the head is loose and easily pulls off. The head was meant to be removable for cleaning, but it is too loose.

If I can pull it off so easily, it stands to reason that if it is stuck in mashed potatoes, it will come off in the pot.

I have not washed this silicone head in a dishwasher (even though the head is dishwasher safe, but not the handle). I only wash things by hand. I don't know why it is loose, except it appears it was manufactured that way.

UPDATE Sept. 4 2009: I received a replacement from Le Creuset. The head on this one is definitely tighter. My plan is to disturb the head as little as possible by not ever removing it. A couple of stray pieces of silicone are right where the head meets the bamboo. I could try to cut them off with a utility knife, but I have chosen to leave them intact. I don't want to risk removing any stray pieces of silicone that, in the process of removing them, might somehow cause the head to loosen, so I am going to leave it as is.

Pros:

* Medium-to-shallow depth spoon shape very utilitarian for many kitchen tasks
* Will not scratch your stainless steel, hard anodized, or nonstick cookware
* Heat resistant up to 482 degrees Fahrenheit
* Stay cool bamboo handles
* Silicone utensils are recommended by some manufacturers of stainless cookware, like All-Clad and Cuisinart, to keep from scratching stainless steel cookware.

I use this spoon for baking. It helps mix the batter and move the batter from mixing bowl to pan beautifully, and it also doesn't get batter stuck all over it as it's silky silicone head makes the batter just glide off. If you'e ever battled with stiff scraping spoons that just seem to transfer the batter back and forth (and on to you!) you'll appreciate what a difference this makes. I didn't need it for high heat, though I have used it for sauteing vegetables as well, and it's worked just fine. I have the smaller size as well.

Edited to add that I use this daily to help get smoothies out of the machine. Having a spoon that food glides off is enormously helpful, and having gone through repeated uses/washings, this spoon looks as good as the day I bought it (a year ago? something like that)

The Le Creuset Spatulas are the very best I have ever used. They will withstand extreme temperatures and with the handle removeable it saves the wood and makes it last even longer. A very very good product. Everyone should have at least 4 in their kitchen!

Whenever I'm shopping for silicon spatulas, the ones I don't put back and keep in my hand always wind up being the Le Creuset brand. Sometimes a brand name does matter. I needed to replace a couple of very, very old Le Creuset spatulas and went to my local cooking store. The feel of the silicone, and the quality of the wood handle was apparent compared to other brands. I was lucky to score a couple that were still marked Made in USA (my personal preference is to avoid China when at all possible). It must have been an earlier order, as the remaining items in the store were all marked Made in China.

These were even better than the ones I was retiring. Food easily slips off the silicone and they are so easy to clean. They are strong enough to hold up to some stiff batters, yet flexible to scrape out the last of my melted chocolate from a double boiler.

I expect these will last as long as the last ones (which succumbed to dry rot, which is very prevalent in my neck of the woods), but I may have to get some additional ones "just because."

I love Le Creuset - particularly the cast iron - and have many of their products, but I found the large spatula spoon to be a disappointment. It's fine for scooping whipped cream or beaten egg whites out of a bowl, but for any sort of scraping or turning application, or scooping of a dense material such as a cookie dough, I find it's really too soft to perform well. The other spatulas are better, although marginally so. I think the ones in the grocery for $1.99 are still our best bet.

I had an older Le Creuset spatula spoon that I absolutely loved and used for cooking every day. After 8 years, it finally got a crack/tear and needed to be replaced. I ordered this and was so disappointed when it arrived! Much less of a spoon and much more of a regular spatula than the older version. Will be keeping it because I don't want to pay for the return shipping but would not order it again and if I had seen it in a store, would not have purchased it.
