Made in France of high-fired stoneware with a non-porous enamel glaze, the butter crock won't absorb odors or flavors, resists staining and chipping, and is dishwasher-safe. A choice of colors embellishes the exterior of the jar and lid in a graded fashion, from dark to light. Le Creuset also makes kitchen canisters and spice jars in the same traditional French country style, in matching or coordinating colors. Each makes a great gift and is covered by a lifetime limited warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

I have not had any problems with it. It holds more than one stick of butter, spreading the butter at room temp, is so nice and easy. We tend to use less of it, than when we had to try and spread butter, cold from the fridge.
All I have to do is change the water every couple of days, and I try and keep it off the counter directly over the dishwasher, or too close to any appliances that give off heat.
To fill, I set the wrapped stick of butter out on the counter for a while, until it gets soft, and I smush in the softened butter with a spoon. Using the back of the spoon, I make a concave area in the middle and make sure the butter touches the sides of the crock.
It is great and everyone who sees it, wants one!
I recommend it!
As for previous reviews that said the butter falls out into the water, I've had this happen once in a while, but only very rarely. The trick is to make sure the crock is dry when you load it with butter, as any water on the inside walls will prevent the butter from sticking, and to pack it firmly. It also helps to soften the butter on the counter or in the microwave before you pack it into the crock, and if you're going to scoop some butter out and then put back the unused part, make sure it's soft and that you pack it firmly onto the butter that's already there or that extra little bit _will_ fall out easily.
** It holds about 1 1/3 stick of butter. So you have to have a way to store the unused stick back in the fridge.
** there is a water line in the base but I think it's too high. There is always a sploosh of water when you pull out the top (see pic) and there just should be. Perhaps a tiny air hole would help.
** It does keep the butter fresh in color and taste and a perfect spreading consistency.
I think I would improve on this by making it a little bigger to take on two full sticks and I would put a tiny air hole on the opposite side of the name or in the flat part of the lid to prevent splashing from the water.
My one complaint about this product is that it simply doesn't store six ounces of butter like it says it does: one four-ounce stick of butter comes almost to the rim of the cup once you've packed it in firmly, so it really only stores four ounces. Considering I paid more for this one specifically because it stored the extra two ounces, I'm frustrated it doesn't store those extra two ounces like the description says.
