Before refrigeration, butter stayed fresh when immersed in water. The stoneware butter crock from Le Creuset uses that same principle, keeping your butter spreadable at room temperature. To use, pack the cup on the underside of the lid with six ounces (about 1-1/2 sticks) of butter. Fill the crock one-third of the way up with cold water. Invert the lid/cup into the water and an air-tight seal is created. When you're ready to spread, open the lid and set it on its wide, flat knob. Change the water every few days for best results.

Made in France of high-fired stoneware with a non-porous enamel glaze, the butter crock won't absorb odors or flavors, resists staining and chipping, and is dishwasher-safe. A choice of colors embellishes the exterior of the jar and lid in a graded fashion, from dark to light. Le Creuset also makes kitchen canisters and spice jars in the same traditional French country style, in matching or coordinating colors. Each makes a great gift and is covered by a lifetime limited warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! April 27, 2009

I really like this product. I was concerned, after reading some reviews on Butter Bells and 'on the counter' storage of butter.

I have not had any problems with it. It holds more than one stick of butter, spreading the butter at room temp, is so nice and easy. We tend to use less of it, than when we had to try and spread butter, cold from the fridge.

All I have to do is change the water every couple of days, and I try and keep it off the counter directly over the dishwasher, or too close to any appliances that give off heat.

To fill, I set the wrapped stick of butter out on the counter for a while, until it gets soft, and I smush in the softened butter with a spoon. Using the back of the spoon, I make a concave area in the middle and make sure the butter touches the sides of the crock.

It is great and everyone who sees it, wants one!

I recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, works well August 17, 2010

This is the second or third butter bell we've owned, as we keep accidentally breaking them, but it's the last model we'll ever buy. It looks great in the kitchen or on the table and the handle on the top is very convenient. Others I've owned made you grasp the edges of the lid top open them, which explains why they kept slipping out of our hands and breaking. As long as you remember to change the water every few days it will keep butter fresh for up to two weeks without refrigeration, and having soft spreadable butter for your toast or English muffin in the morning is, if not the best thing ever, at least a little nice.

As for previous reviews that said the butter falls out into the water, I've had this happen once in a while, but only very rarely. The trick is to make sure the crock is dry when you load it with butter, as any water on the inside walls will prevent the butter from sticking, and to pack it firmly. It also helps to soften the butter on the counter or in the microwave before you pack it into the crock, and if you're going to scoop some butter out and then put back the unused part, make sure it's soft and that you pack it firmly onto the butter that's already there or that extra little bit _will_ fall out easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars gatekeeper of the butter June 27, 2009
Color Name:Cherry
This is my fourth butter bell and, by far, this one is the best of the lot; it's slightly larger than other bells and it's composed of very sturdy stoneware. In short, it's the bomb and well worth the few extra dollars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soft butter all the time May 14, 2009
Color Name:Cobalt|Amazon Verified Purchase
This crock actually works. You'll have room temperature butter anytime you want it. It holds about 1 and 1/2 sticks of butter. Just bring the butter to room temperature, pack it tightly in the upside-down cup, fill the base with a little water, and your butter will stay fresh and at room temperature. Although the instructions suggest changing the water every 3-4 days, I find that I only need to change it about once every 10 days or so. When using the butter, be careful to remove it evenly from the top working your way down. If you take too much from one side, the glob of butter will end up sliding out of the cup and down into the water when you pull out the cup. When the cup is full of butter, you'll have some water clinging to its surface, but blotting with a paper towel will easily solve that problem.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't store as much as it says July 6, 2010
Color Name:White|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is just the kind of thing we were looking for - a way to store butter at room temperature so it's easily spread, but protected so it doesn't go bad. The water doesn't really interfere with using the lid to spread butter, and it's not hard to remember to change the water when we run the dishwasher every 2-3 days. We hand wash this so I can't speak to whether it's really dishwasher-safe, but it seems sturdy and well-made. One thing to remember is that you can't just shove a stick of refrigerated butter in here; the butter must be packed into the cup so it sticks to the sides in order to prevent it falling out into the water when you want to use it. This means you have to let the butter come to room temperature before you pack it into the butter crock, and you have to pack it in well in order to make sure it sticks to the sides of the cup.

My one complaint about this product is that it simply doesn't store six ounces of butter like it says it does: one four-ounce stick of butter comes almost to the rim of the cup once you've packed it in firmly, so it really only stores four ounces. Considering I paid more for this one specifically because it stored the extra two ounces, I'm frustrated it doesn't store those extra two ounces like the description says.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Twice the Price February 16, 2012
By Fanalf
Color Name:Cherry
I had been wanting this butter crock for quite a while -- researched different brands and decided on this le creuset one. However, the price kept me from purchasing. Seemed a bit frivolous. Well, a month ago, I happened upon a le creuset outlet and purchased this one for less that the advertised price. Trust me, its worth it at the $30 level! I'm buying these for christmas gifts for people. I've had several casual dinner parties since I purchased and everyone LOVES and is fixated with this crock. The butter is so soft and creamy -- its a bit of a problem bc you actually use more than your normally would bc it spreads so easily. I bake a lot so the soft butter on homemade breads or pastries -- can't beat it! I haven't had a problem with the butter falling in the water -- I change the cold water every other day and I don't necessarily keep the butter tank filled. I use it until it runs out and then refill... and there has been no issues. This is a definite MUST BUY Product! You won't understand until you have one! My only regret is not getting one sooner.
