Writing new scores to Georges Melies' classic film "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" (The Trip to the Moon) has become quite fashionable in recent years. This CD/DVD combo from 2009 (which I highly recommend) has four different soundtracks created by four different modern composers. Now the French electronic duo Air has a go at it. I find their soundtrack interesting and compelling.

"Le Voyage Dans La Lune" is considered by many to be the first science fiction film ever. Filmed in 1902 (!!), the plot combines a few early moon shot stories by Jules Verne and HG Wells. It's kind of corny to modern eyes, but is definitely a classic, and if you haven't seen it, you probably should. They get to the moon being shot out of a big cannon, and meet a bunch of nasty moon men there.

The movie is 15 minutes long, but Air has written 31 minutes of music. So don't expect the soundtrack album to match up exactly with the film. The album features basically longer versions of the music from the film.

The real highlight of the package is the video. This MP3 package also contains the film in its entirety, in both MP4 and WMV versions. In addition to the Air music, this video -- unlike other versions out there -- restores the color to the original Melies version of the film.

Color in a 1902 movie? Yes. Melies, they say, hand-painted every frame of the black and white film. Somehow these colors have been restored.

The music by Air is excellent to accompany the film, but honestly it's not quite to my taste on its own. I'm not that into electronic music. But I am interested in classic movies, and specifically in all these new soundtracks to "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" that have been turning up recently. It was the availability of the new color-restored version of the film that really sold me on this package at the Daily Deal price on February 7, 2012. No regrets -- five stars for the film with the new music. Not sure I'll be listening to the music on its own, but who knows?

Highly recommended for anyone who thinks a project like this sounds interesting. If you like this, consider the more "classical" soundtracks on the set mentioned above from 2009. I'm looking forward to listening to those other new soundtracks with the color-restored film featured here.

Poor Video Quality February 8, 2012

Got this mainly to watch the video even though I like Air. Poor video quality and encoding of the download. Seems like there was a lot of digital distortion in it. Wonder if anyone else is encountering this. Stopped watching after a few minutes.

Not Love2, but Overdue February 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought the CD/DVD copy, so for some reviewers here, I can add my two cents having not downloaded it. Video Review is further down.

Music:
This isn't the next installment from Talkie Walkie, Pocket Symphony, or Love2--Not even close. Air changes direction frequently, which is one of the things that should open our minds up to what they will do next. Think of this collection as another soundtrack, which it really is. If you like The Virgin Suicides soundtrack, you can set your expectations as such, and come into this with a fresh set of ears. Don't sample it---LISTEN to it; all the way through. It's a concept.

If you don't want another sound track, fortunately, there are a couple of thematic "singles" that you may be pleased to repeat by themselves and add them to your iTunes playlist. I particularly like Seven Stars and Parade. Much of the rest is a landscape, met with a few urgency themes. I won't spoil too much more, but again, if you take this album as more of a soundtrack to an old film as interpreted by Air in their realm, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Lots of Air elements, with some fresh and appealing directions, but at times transparent to the point you forget that Air is actually performing this music.

Give it a solid chance and I think you'll be pleased. I don't see many Air fans disappointed. If you find that you're a critic, and are looking for a solid followup to Love2 or another 10,000Hz Legend, this isn't going to totally get you moving. If you don't have any expectations at all, you'll quickly believe Air has put a lot of the right kind of effort into this and have created a new escape The Virgin Suicide fans have wanted for years!

Video:
Some have said the video quality was poor. Maybe so for the download version (I can't say), but considering that this film is 110 years old, originally shot in Black&White, then hand-painted to color, lost then found many years later, I didn't find that necessarily to be the case. But I bought the DVD version. Watching it on a Dell 30" LCD monitor I can easily see the limitations of the original work restored, but not exactly the CODEC quality. I think the DVD Codec conversion was fine. The disclaimer tells that there was some damaged parts of the film, which had to be restored and digitally recreated from the Black&White film. Between this and the fact that the hand-painted color from back then couldn't have been Technicolor by any means. I think I would have preferred the Black&White film digitally colored over the hand-painting, but the authenticity of the paint presents a sort of campy-ness Sci-fi fans would prefer.

I don't know.
I'd love to write a review for this, but after almost 8 weeks from the day I ordered it, I have yet to see it.

Extremely Poor Audio Quality
This CD's extremely high level of ultra-compressed audio lends itself to major listening fatigue after only a minute or two. I love all of Air's music but I can't listen to this.

A Favorite
I'm all for bands that push themselves artistically. When U2 came out of a giant lemon, I applauded their efforts, even if Pop wasn't as good as Achtung Baby or The Joshua Tree. Read more

Not what I expected, but still cool.
I was hoping this album would be more like Moon Safari, Talkie Walkie or Pocket Symphony. It seems to be more of a chillout album. Read more
