Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Quilters love pieced star blocks, but how do you handle the set-in pieces to make flat-lying blocks with perfect points? Now there's an answer with Sharyn Craig's easy Y-seaming construction method. This pattern plus instruction book contains easy-to-follow photos that show how to use the method to piece a perfect LeMoyne Star, working from the outside to the center of the block. After mastering the Y-seam technique, you'll apply it to dozens of other block patterns such as Morning Star, Virginia Star, North Star, Rolling Star and Flying Swallows. Block diagrams, piecing guidelines, full-size pattern pieces and rotary cutting dimensions for a dozen blocks, each in two sizes, are included. There's a bonus block, too. An exciting photo gallery features 16 stunning quilts and Sharyn offers plenty of guidance on settings so there's a wealth of ideas for using the blocks! There's even a chapter on drafting with two handy formulas so creative quilters can make Star blocks in any size they wish. Get starry-eyed over the designs and how-to's packed in the latest book from this popular quilting teacher.

More About the Author

When Sharyn walked into the door of her first quilting class in the fall of 1978, she had no idea how that simple action would change the rest of her life. She had always loved to sew and do crafts. In fact, she had been a Home Economics major in college, graduating with a degree in Clothing and Textiles. Just attending one quilting class made it clear what all that training had been leading up to. Today she teaches, lectures, and writes about her passion, quiltmaking, and has authored twelve previous books. She has also been a regular contributor to Traditional Quiltworks magazine, having originated the Design Challenge column. You can visit Sharyn on her web site at www.sharyncraig.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful quilt, not so great instructions, April 11, 2005
This review is from: LeMoyne Stars Made Easy (Paperback)
This quilt contains 12 beautiful LeMoyne (Y-seam) stars with many ideas of how they can be put together. The small book contains 32 pages of fully colored pages and templates for 2 sizes of blocks 12" and 10.25". The simplest 8 point star has a nice step-by-step with plenty of pictures to show you how to set these stars in with the dreaded Y-seam.

This is where this book fails after the first block. First, I was not able to make flat stars using their technique. So, I ended up mixing their style with a traditional technique to create acurate, flat stars.

The instructions for the next 6 blocks are simply a colored picture and then a line drawing for the block. There are some cutting demensions, but mostly just numbers for the templates. Here too, they only give numbers for some of the peices, and you have to just kind of guess at the ones that are not labeled.

The remaining blocks have a few more lined drawings, but no more than a brief sentence of instructions. And finally there are no real directions to put the quilt on the cover together. There are some generic directions, but there should be some direct instructions for the featured quilt on the cover of the book.

The good is that it does help you figure out your own settings, so the book can be adapted to any project you are inspired by.

Final Verdict: Recommeneded for the experienced quilter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, January 25, 2007
This review is from: LeMoyne Stars Made Easy (Paperback)
I found the Y-seam method easier than traditional setting for LeMoyne stars. The instructions are pretty clear even if you're new to quilting, like me. I had to look them over twice to make sure I was doing what I was supposed to, and it worked great and is easier than it looks. I checked this book out from the library and would like a copy of my own, it really is useful. I'll have to buy her new book too.

4.0 out of 5 stars LeMoyne Stars with set in y-seams, October 23, 2006
By
This review is from: LeMoyne Stars Made Easy (Paperback)
"LeMoyne Stars Made Easy" is a small book (32 pages) with 12 different star patterns. I thought the instructions were clear and easy to follow, unlike the other reviewer who submitted a review. Sharyn has step-by-step instructions on how to set set-in y-seams. All patterns use templates.
