5.0 out of 5 stars "Un-Lea-like" album, but good
I've seen Ms. Salonga in many productions and the songs in this album certainly don't require the same vocal or emotional demands her usual repertoire includes. But the ones here are equally pleasant to listen to -- some are slow, some are upbeat, but all are melodic; they're songs you can sing to. Give the CD a chance. It'll grow on you.

As far as some comments...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lea has better albums..
Although this was Lea's first international release, many of the people from the US don't know that she had already released two albums in Asia, One in 1997 entitled "In Love" and another in 1999 entitled "By Heart". If you want to hear the whole wonderful voice of Lea with less of the instruments and backup vocals, try to get hold of copies of the...

I've seen Ms. Salonga in many productions and the songs in this album certainly don't require the same vocal or emotional demands her usual repertoire includes. As far as some comments about pop singing here go (particularly from "Fines" below), we already know that not only does Ms. Salonga have wit, she has REAL talent and has been recognized many times for this. She's a full-fledged theater star and has earned the RESPECT of audiences, peers, and critics for her performances. She does NOT need to aspire to be a 'pop star' nor compete with the younger -- or any generation, for that matter -- of pop singers, who will always be more popular. (Of course, TV-film music stars will always be more popular than theater stars since in addition to the huge marketing blitz their respective labels put out, any person in any place in the world can watch television or borrow tapes to see them, while theater actors have to depend on their respective productions' meager budgets and wait for people to actually come to the theater to see them, DUH!) Fines' assumption that Ms. Salonga should compete with the younger generation of pop stars is like telling her to transform from being a five-star deluxe hotel on 5th Ave in Manhattan to being a one-star motel in the Bronx (the one-star motel being more popular since it's cheap and more affordable -- but talk about the QUALITY...) Britney Spears, a very big pop star, is popular (gigantic proportions!), but does ANYONE ever take her singing -- or acting (haha!) -- seriously? Do you think the music and acting communities actually look up to her for her "talents"? Get real!

5.0 out of 5 stars She finished what she started!, October 2, 2002

I first discovered leah salonga in "Miss saigon." When I learned that she had made a solo album, I had to get it. She definitely shines in her debut. I love every single song on this album. It is very mellow, with lots of songs you might like to listen while getting up in the morning, or on a sunday drive somewhere. Her duet with her "Aladdin" co singer brad kane, is definitely one that I put on repeat, as well as "finish what you started", 'What a journey", and several others. If you love leah, take a listen to this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, April 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Lea Salonga (Audio CD)
With her amazing voice, Lea Salonga gives a lift to all the songs in this pop recording that has aged really well and has been well-received in many countries.

The best numbers are "The Journey," "I Honestly Love You," and "We Could Be in Love," but all the other songs have the same soothing and upbeat consistency that will make you want to play the album repeatedly without losing interest in the songs.

To those who want the more "Lea-like" sound, her Broadway Concert CD is a goldmine. Here, Lea sings some of the most memorable songs ever written for the Broadway stage. Among the best numbers are Flower Drum Song's "I Enjoy Being A Girl" and "Love, Look Away" which are performed livelier here than in the already excellent Broadway version, Miss Saigon's "Too Much for One Heart," and Chess' "Someone Else's Story," capped by the powerful medley of The King & I's "Something Wonderful" and "Being Alive."

Lea Salonga is one of those singers who can make listening to songs a magical experience. She's one performer I would like to see more of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great voice, but songs don't keep up, December 25, 2001

Lea Salonga has a beautiful voice but it's not showcased in this album. Most of the time, it's drowned out by synthesizers and other unnecessary instrumentations. Plus, Lea's voice is best suited for standards, ballads and broadway songs. It also doesn't help that the pop songs here have trite and banal lyrics. But Lea's voice is still golden when singing tracks like "it's Just Goodbye", "We could be In Love," and "I honestly Love You." Pure pleasure to listen to that voice.

But if you want an album that is pure Lea, you'll have to check out her albums released in the Philippines. The best I've heard so far is a concert recording of hers called, "Songs From The Screen." In this album, you'll hear Lea's own version of songs from famous movies. It's simply sublime. :) I hope Amazon.com takes up my suggestion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice from heaven!!!!, September 4, 2000

Though the songs were beautifully written and sang, nevertheless I believe that Lea Salonga, and the extra-ordinary voice she possess, deserves a better album than this. When is the next album coming out????

I've had this album for quite sometime now, but I still haven't grown tired of it. Ms. Salonga's voice is always great to listen to no matter what kind of song is being performed, and I'm one of the many who love to hear her sing Broadway tunes yet welcome the change of repertoire in this album.

Bravo for a great job, Ms. Salonga, and I hope you'll release more albums!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds Expectations, April 8, 2004

This is the first online purchase that i made from amazon.com, along with my SAT reviewers. Lea Salonga's impeccable voice will surely have you craving for more.I was fortunate enough to visit the Philippines last year and got all of her available recordings,in addition to my fds, ms, les miz recordings, 11 all in all, including one that was recorded when she was still young (i assume she was younger than 12).And in addition to that, i get to watch the Songs from home live, which is in Filipino, except for the song Two WOrds which she sang at her wedding.Lucky for me, we have subscription to The Filipino CHannel. She's really a joy to watch, her voice far exceeds the so-called singers of today (and people who fancy themselves singers). She may or may not impress Simon Cowell, but one cannot deny that she is way better than most of the contestants in American Idol.

This cd is so different from her other recordings, i especially enjoyed the songs "The Journey" (I used it as background music for the video montage for my own debutante's ball, and my friend's quincenera),"It's Just Goodbye", I HOnestly Love You, and We Could be in love. I just hope amazon.com will start selling her other recordings so I won't have to bother my friends to send me cds . Anyway, I got most of her cds for less than 10 bucks (I think it was 375 pesos for most of her cds) so i'm not complaining, plus the Philippines is full of talented singers, so i'm very keen on visiting the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen more to hear the subtle meaning and emotion, August 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lea Salonga (Audio CD)
At first listen, the songs to me were pleasant, but uninteresting. But by the third time however, I started to understand and appreciate the power and the feeling behind this young woman's words. The lyrics are meaningful, but the music and Lea's beautiful voice enhance their overall effect by tenfold. Very strong, true, and honest feelings being expressed about love and unity by the purest and warmest of voices and people, Lea Salonga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice!, March 6, 2004

I'm not a musical theater follower, but my wife is, and she introduced me to Lea Salonga via her "Broadway Concert" CD. This performer has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard!

This CD is the second of hers that I've listened to, and frankly, I don't see what the fuss is about this one being 'pop.' She comes off as natural in pop singing as she is singing Broadway tunes (to me, her voice and style are very flexible to do a cross-over from one genre to the next). In fact, her voice should be considered a gift to the pop music industry, which has been dominated by run-of-the-mill "singers" for years.

I like listening to her voice and would definitely not mind having my wife play more of her albums in our car.

Wonderful voice. Heart-warming interpretation of songs. This is one album that should age really well. I hope Ms. Salonga comes out with more albums in the U.S.
