Review

Lead From The Heart is now being taught in business, entrepreneurship and leadership classes at two major US colleges: Northern Arizona University and Embry-Riddle-Aeronautical-University.
Author, Mark C. Crowley, recently gave the very first commencement speech ever made at Colorado Technical University.

About the Author

First and foremost, Mark C. Crowley is a business leader.

Mark spent over 20 years working as a senior leader at one of the nation's largest financial institutions, most recently as Senior Vice President, National Manager for investment product sales.  After leading his division to record sales and profits, he was named the firm's Leader of the Year.

Throughout his highly accomplished career, Mark managed people in myriad business units (including Retail Banking, Lending, Business Banking and Investments) and routinely achieved exceptional performance.  In all his roles, he consistently proved that leadership which balances the mind and heart - which intentionally supports and values people - is a far more productive and sustainable way of driving the highest levels of employee engagement and profit.

Mark is recognized as a major thought leader in workplace management and engagement.  In addition to being a consultant and compelling professional speaker, he's a frequent contributor to Fast Company Magazine, and has had his work published by the Huffington Post, The Seattle Times, Reuters, CEO Magazine and The Great Place To Work Institute.

Mark is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego and the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of California.  He holds four investment securities licenses and is a licensed California Real Estate Broker.  Connect with Mark on his website, markccrowley.com, Twitter, @markccrowley, and Facebook, Facebook.com/leadfromtheheart.

In a single-day quick-read format, Crowley provides a compelling case for injecting more "heart" into management and leadership roles in Corporate America. The title itself piques interest, and a combination of anecdotal and researched realities should create a number of "uh-huh's" and "aha's" for a number of managers AND aspiring managers in today's work environment. With examples from a childhood nobody could cherish re-telling, Crowley's obviously cathartic tale enables visualization of a father-son relationship virtually de-void of heart with one cited outlying event.

Crowley is not the 1st author to convince readers that happier employees are also more successful and productive, but he offers up a 4-step pathway to hiring and leading with more heart, after some compelling framework set-up surrounding current-day scientific research on the heart and it's relevance. A very enjoyable quick and beneficial read.

I read this book in one sitting, not only is it an organized compilation of personal experience, it is an intelligent explanation to the dissatisfaction of the American workforce. I was appreciative of the detailed analysis of how to effectively lead others and the research that backed it up. I would recommend this book as required reading for anyone entering the management field and who desires to contribute to a more positive working environment.

As a professor who teaches both Management and Organizational Leadership courses, I found Mark C. Crowley's new book, Lead from the Heart, both an insightful and a must-read on leadership. It is refreshing to be reminded of core principles of leadership, whether you running a small business or a big multinational corporation, it all comes back to treating people properly and with a kindness of heart as so eloquently explained in Mark C. Crowley's new book.

With so much theory advocated in the last 30 years and so much lip service given to leadership, there still remains a deficiency of guidance and direction in modern leadership. Whether it is in our schools, our companies, or definitely in our governments, there is both a lack of ethics and leadership. In Greek, the word aristocracy means "the best", and the concept simply is the best should lead their company as well as in government. At least, that is the concept behind both management and leadership.

Lead from the Heart, brings back the concept of values on leadership, and Mark C. Crowley's own experiences are based primarily in banking for many years and leading different organizations within banks, and in a sense he speaks from both experience and the heart. His anecdotal stories throughout his book bring home how the heart is a really thinking organ and we should learn to tune-in and use this part of our rational abilities to understand and deal with human drama in the workplace. Mr. Crowley last story in his book, demonstrates beautifully the whole point of the book on why the heart should lead and how it succeeds in almost every workplace interactions.

This book from Mark C. Crowley is not a long read and its message is both poignant and significant in today's world.

I was drawn to the subtitle "transformational leadership for the 21st century". If ever there was a time for that, it's now! Reading the book, a quick and satisfying read, I found it to be way more than just a leadership book. Fascinating and compelling content about innovations in science, the impact of wellness in the workforce and what it takes to be engaged in your job are just a few of the additional aspects of this smart book. This book peeks your curiosity on a number of subjects, it evokes thought and reflection, it's motivating and encouraging and it speaks to all of us, no matter what the job or position, age or gender. Crowley's voice is insightful and self-deprecating. His expertise is clear as he takes you along his own discovery. My only wish is that Crowley was my boss! Or at the very least, maybe he could come and talk to mine.

As a life-long student of leadership I can't say how profoundly this book touched my heart. I have followed Mark Crowley's work on Twitter and always found him to be insightful and inspirational. I was immediately drawn to his powerful words of leading others. Needless to say I was thrilled when the book came out. I was probably one of the first people to download the book and have read it twice already. I have read hundreds of book on leadership. Mark includes all the good stuff that we know to be true, but then he adds a special touch of ensuring when you lead others you lead them with your true self. You give your team everything you want your team to produce. I studied Educational Leadership and taught school for many years. This book explains exactly what I would want from every teacher I lead and as a teacher what I would expect of myself for my students. For you never know when you are the one and only person in someone's life to bring them along. I AM a firm believer that when you make it to where you consider success you haven't reached the top until you help those behind you through the door with you. Great Leaders Create Great Leaders. That is a a measurable outcome of great leadership. Mark reminds us to strive to always be a powerful source and resource to those we lead. I'm very touched by the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a student of leadership, but especially to Educational Leaders. We have to ensure our educators know their "stuff" but if they don't teach and lead with their hearts they will be missing pricless opportunities to touch the lives of the people they lead and teach. Don't be a boss be a leader and Lead from your Heart.
