I picked up a copy of Ruggero's and Haley's (R & H) "Leader's Compass" (2003 hardback) for supplemental reading in a recent Human Resource Management (HRM) course. It is a pleasant surprise to find a surplus of information is such a small text (only 130 total pages). The authors say early on that much of their excellent study results form their days of learning leadership in the U.S. Navy (pages i and ii).

The authors complete the book in four easy to read chapters as a novel. Through the day-to-day business dealing of the main character, R & H offer brilliant human resource management techniques and actionable leadership philosophy. We learn the value of self-analysis, the importance of personal ethics and corporate values, the requirements for communal respect, the significance of honesty, the need for purposeful motivation, the necessity of active listening, the meaning for debriefing and after-action reviews, and much more.

"The Leader's Compass" is an action novel that speaks directly to the leader's ability and needs in the contemporary workplace. Although it is a quick read, you will want to review it often. Applying the principles of its "command policy" (pages 113-115) will improve your leadership skills and make you a better manager.
