Book Description

October 1, 2003

With over 500,000 copies sold, and a brand new author's note, this timeless leadership classic is more essential than ever. “An insightful book that should be read by every manager aspiring to be a true leader…. Potentially one of the most important books of its type in a long time.” -- Chicago Tribune

In this illuminating study of corporate America's most critical issue -- leadership -- world-renowned leadership guru Warren Bennis and his co-author Burt Nanus reveal the four key principles every manager should know: Attention Through Vision, Meaning Through Communication, Trust Through Positioning, and The Deployment of Self.

In this age of "process", with downsizing and restructuring affecting many workplaces, companies have fallen trap to lack of communication and distrust, and vision and leadership are needed more than ever before. The wisdom and insight in Leaders addresses this need. It is an indispensable source of guidance all readers will appreciate, whether they're running a small department or in charge of an entire corporation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Manager versus Leader October 18, 2005
Format:Paperback
Learning the differences between manager and leader are essential to successful executives. Bennis and Nanus' book gives specific examples of the fundamental elements needed for both positions, beginning with strategies, the first of which is having a vision for the organization. Meaningful quotes from dozens of world leaders throughout the book, many of which were interviewed for their leadership views. The authors end with leadership empowerment, a motivational closing to anyone with their sights set on being a successful leader. Recommended reading for those on their way up as well as a good reminder of the importance of staying focused for those already leading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful May 19, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It was a helpful book but not one that I would be willing to keep in my library for a long period of time. It covers alot of basic things that most people do need to know but if you have been in a position of leadership for a long period of time, most of the things covered should have already been learned if the leader seeks to learn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great One! November 7, 2006
Format:Paperback
Of all the books I have read on leadership, I will have to put this one in the top five. Bennis and Nanus have masterly laid out the essential principles of leaders and have also substantiated them with poignant examples.

Their revision is greatly welcome by those of us who enjoy reading leadership literature.

I highly recommend this book.
