I truly enjoyed reading this book very, very much. I read a lot of business/leadership books - more than 100 a year - and it is rare when I can learn something new and exciting every few pages in a book. Now - a disclaimer -- I am interviewed in this book -- so I will say I learned something new and exciting in all the other chapters!! I found REAL value in Donna's book - she did a superb job pulling all of this information together from so many talented people - I am positive you will greatly enjoy reading "Leaders: Their Stories, Their Words."

This book is a catalyst for thought-provoking conversations about real-world leadership. Donna has carefully selected leaders from diverse backgrounds such as an Oscar-winner, a senator, an award-winning geneticist, a naval officer, a diplomat -- voices unified by what Donna calls "Human-based Leadership". For me, their humanity surfaces as they relate the struggles and breakthroughs on their journeys. These stories demystify leadership and point to the fact that anyone can step up and be a leader, especially when his/her focus is on making a positive impact on people's lives. "Leaders: Their Stories, Their Words" is an enlightening read for managers, executives, for-profit and non-profit leaders who want a reminder that leadership is not a paint-by-numbers mechanical following of steps, but an authentic, "as lived" experience that is infused with our humanity.

I have been anxiously awaiting this book to come out as I feel it will become a classic in the library of all executive coaches who work with leaders in diverse organizations. It gives us an intimate peek into how high impact leaders see themselves and the struggles they have to remain human and humble in the midst of enormous challenges. This work fits well into the literature of servant leadership and stewardship. Hopefully it will help leaders see how they can be more impactful and able to channel their passion for change into creating a future that is both sustainable and life enriching. The world desperately needs such leaders.

Format: Paperback
Donna Karlin, experienced Shadow Coach, has gathered a dozen conversations from extraordinary leaders from diverse fields who all share one thing in common - they put their attention first on the people, then on the results they intend to achieve. And do they ever deliver results! I found these conversations inspiring and the perspectives fresh, reasoned, and provocative. Whether your organizational role is that of performer, manager, and/or leader, you will find knowledge and wisdom to support what you care about. Learn and apply liberally, and enjoy the process.

Donna Karlin has done a marvelous job of giving the reader a glimpse of what makes great leaders tick. Each interview is interesting and insightful. Her interview style is open and engaging and it is clear how carefully she has chosen the leaders she speaks with. The book is a little like delightful eavesdropping - you'll feel like you're right there.
