"Leadership Caffeine" is what the title implies - a pick-me-up for those looking to how to lead as well as how to lead more effectively. If this is you, then "Leadership Caffeine" will serve you well. Comprised of over 80 short chapters on topics ranging from decision-making to delegation, agility to resilience, this book provides a practical guide to encouraging others to follow your lead. The chapters on team building are insightful and well-worth putting into practice. Also included are thoughtful sections on self-development and reflection. The author, Art Petty, smartly includes questions and workbook style exercises at the end of every chapter. These are good as reflective exercises as well as activities you can try with your team. "Leadership Caffeine" is a must-have leadership guide.

I want to start writing this review by saying that I know the author, not that this fact should deter you from reading my review because Art Petty is one of the best sources on becoming a leader I have ever encountered.

How do I know?

I got to know Art well when he was a professor of mine for the first business class I attended in college. Art was and still is a popular professor because he made class fun with stories from his days as a scrappy entry level professional and his experience as an executive at a tech company. Bottom line, the man rose through the ranks and did well - you don't do that without knowing a thing or two about leadership. Some of my best career and leadership enlightenment comes from sitting down with Art and absorbing his mentoring over a latte.

When he told me he was writing this book based on some of the material that was on his blog at ArtPetty.com, I was thrilled, and I couldn't wait to see the results. I wasn't disappointed, Leadership Caffeine imparts many of the lessons Art teaches to students in his classes at DePaul and has echoes of the conversations that I have had with him over coffee. The book goes in depth on many valuable topics: dealing with a bad boss, overcoming negative thoughts, building a high performance team, and standing out from the competition by being a game changer.

Art has had much success in his career and he's made mistakes as well, he relays them to the reader and gives examples of what can be learned from each situation. That in it of itself makes this book valuable because learning from an executive's experiences gives others a roadmap to becoming one.

Great leaders aren't born - they're made.

Leadership Caffeine is just what the title implies: essays and ideas that give you a jolt to develop and remember what it takes to be a good leader. There are so many essays in this book that I wish my former bosses would have read. At the same token, it's those same essays that will help me develop the necessary skills to effectively manage my own teams. One of the best things about Leadership Caffeine is that it's not the type of book you have to read cover to cover and has topics and essays that can fit every situation that you might find yourself needing advice and guidance for. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to amp up his or her professional development and become an effective leader.

I'm not finished but haven't found a weak chapter yet. Some are very relevant to my current leadership experience. Some I already know and I suspect some are beyond me just yet. This will long have a place in my reference library.

This book is the essential tool to anyone who wants to stimulate or evolve the scope of their leadership capability. I enjoy the "quick read" aspect, where I can pick it up and read an essay or two and then go on about the day. It makes the substance applicable to the daily office and management life. I can refer to chapters that apply to situational agendas and use it as a reference guide. It currently sits on my office bookshelf next to Art's other book, "Practical Lessons in Leadership" which I also recommend. Petty's experience in these areas is tremendous, and it is evident in his writing. Enjoy these books. Share them with friends and colleagues. You will not be disappointed.
