Editorial Reviews

Review

"A true gem among the avalanche of books published each year on leadership. In a very different voice, Amanda Sinclair provides us with deep insights in her search for a different type of leader and she truly liberates us from the shadow side of the leader within."  —Professor Manfred Kets de Vries, director, INSEAD Global Leadership Center

"This is a marvellous book, one of the best I have ever read on leadership . . . Beautifully written, clear and concise, it is also personal, experiential and empowering."  —Professor David Collinson, Lancaster University Management School

"At long last, Amanda Sinclair blows open leadership myths. This book is a must for all of us who want leadership to be about liberation and freedom."  —Rhonda Galbally, CEO, www.ourcommunity.com.au

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Iain C. Massey on December 1, 2008
Format: Paperback
Do you find some of the leadership psychobabble superficial or even spine-chilling? Do you find yourself concerned about what is not discussed or not said in "leadership development"? Do you wonder why self-indulgent and megalomaniac behaviour is tolerated and even admired in "leaders"?

If so, you may be one of the "disillusioned" of Sinclair's title. Not disillusioned with leading and making a difference in the world, but with how we are told these things ought to be done.

Sinclair draws out the subtextual connections from pop leadership theory and practice to fascism and narcissism, dissecting the stereotypes. Then she offers other, non-destructive ways of being a leader. "Good leadership liberates," as she says. You don't have to copy superstar CEOs to be an effective leader - better not, in fact.

Sinclair astutely deconstructs the accepted theory, practice and teaching of leadership. She argues that accepted myths of leadership have a hold over us, and we can free ourselves by understanding them and their social context.

This book is also a story of Sinclair's own journey as a business school writer and teacher on leadership. This has taken her into both conflict and insight, and in the end into greater self-knowledge.

Her tone can be a bit academic, a little wooden, but her experiences, insights and heart are so much more genuine than the run of the mill stuff on leadership. Excellent!

Excellent book on leadership for the complexities of our era, moving away from the self-help hero narrative of big business to how to be a real person who can lead with people rather than at the expense of them
