Book Description

July 6, 2010
The world's problems can be summed up in just a few words: lack of leadership. While the world is in desperate need of leaders very few people have the tools to become one. Oliver and Rachel DeMille's Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning is the manual that every person who aspires to be an effective leader, or to raise one, needs. Principled decision-making, the cultivation of character, studying the classics, and using critical thinking skills are just a few of the lost educational virtues of today restored by this book. An in-depth look at the philosophy and phases of education are indispensable when creating leaders. This book will help any family find the direction they are looking for when pursuing leadership education. This book teaches not only the theories behind Thomas Jefferson Education but also the practical application of these theories for you and your children. If we apply the philosophy contained in Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning then we will transform not only our families and our classrooms, but the world.

Who would have thought it possible for young people between the ages of 13 and 18 to beg to have the opportunity to study for 8+ hours a day only to break to eat and play a game with their younger siblings, AND willingly take on family responsibilites AND even find sleeping a BURDEN? We have watched this phenomenon as our family applied the timeless principles taught in Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning. At first I thought this brilliant plan was the "brain child" of the DeMilles. I quickly learned as I began practicing the "you, not them" approach which is to get my own Liberal Arts education, is what the DeMilles had accomplished was to carefully map out into phases the physical, educational, emotional and spiritual needs of all human beings. I sped through all three of the books just to get a complete overview, then went back and annotated Leadership Education. I realized that most of our children (and myself) were in desperate need of a "love of learning" phase, which the "conveyor belt" education/parenting model crushes almost completely. I carefully followed the clear and outlined steps found in the three Thomas Jefferson Education (TJEd) books. Yes, it takes effort, work, commitment and planning. Isn't that the example we are supposed to be setting for our children? As parents, we took the lead and the children are following, just as the DeMilles say happened in the lives of inspiring Greats of the past and present. As we continue to study classics and submit to mentoring, I find over and over and over again examples of this pattern of growth. From Euclid and Archimedes down to Thomas Jefferson and Nathanial Bowditch which continues down in history to myself and my family. Submit to be inspired by mentors and classics and then pay the price to be inspiring to all those you meet. This is the pattern. This is how we discover our mission in life. This book and the direction it points to is changing lives and families, regardless of how "unscientific" some think it is. Scientific thought changes from day to day it seems. History stands firm. Leadership Education has history to back it. The first TJEd book called Thomas Jefferson Education is a great quick read (in a nut shell) A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-first Century. I have several of these that I keep constantly loaned out to curious and fascinated family and friends. Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning is an in depth reading focusing on the phases from birth to death. The TJEd Home Companion A Thomas Jefferson Education Home Companion is filled with specific, concrete ideas for implementing leadership education. Check out Leadership Education Mentoring Institute (LEMI) to find out about the classroom of the future modeled after education of the past, it's called The New Commonwealth School.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed! January 20, 2009
Format:Paperback
After reading A Thomas Jefferson Education, I agreed with the concept, but couldn't quite figure how to implement it in my home. So I purchased The TJEd Home Companion, which provided some more detailed information, but still left me unsure what steps to take next. So I gave it one more shot and purchased Leadership Education: The Phases of Learning. THIS is the book that has helped us begin implementing the concepts in our homeschool. It details the phases and gives concrete ideas on how to go about building this type of educational paradigm in your home. This book, along with A Thomas Jefferson Education, are beginning to free us from "doing school" at home and duplicating the pitiful education we received on the "conveyor belt," and our children are LOVING IT!
