Editorial Reviews

Review

"A year had passed since our last strategy+business review of leadership book and CEO memoirs, so a trip to Borders was in order to see what was new in those categories. We discovered almost all the books in the management section had been published within the last calendar year (apparently most business books have a short shelf life). However, there was a notable exception: Leadership for Dummies (John Wiley & Sons, 1999), by Marshall Loeb and Stephen Kindel, was well stocked and in the same prominent place on the shelf as a year ago...and was now in its second printing. Perhaps the parlous state of America s corporate governance explains why Dummies has found such traction." (Strategy+Business, Fourth Quarter 2002)

Ok, so turning to the for dummies books on a new subject is not a bad approach, and this book does provide a good overview. However, the author make many leaps of logic and did not do a very good job researching is antedotes.

One example is when the author talks about Pres. Truman being a product of the Pendergast political machine in St. Louis. Well, it was actually Kansas City. Not the point of the story, but it does show that the author was careless with his facts.

Sometimes the basic things are what create leadership. This book is packed with leadership anecdotes and tips that you really don't think about when leading.

I'm new to this topic and wish I had read this yearsssss ago. I'm a supervisor for the first time in my life as a summer intern with a Federal agency. I read this before arriving at my current job and am very thankful I did so. No regrets.

Leadership for Dummies®, by Marshall Loeb, former managing editor of Fortune and Money magazines, and Stephen Kindel, former president of Pull Technologies, is equally comprehensive and helpful as the recently released 4th edition of the Nonprofit Kit For Dummies.

In describing three types of leadership styles (the chief strategist, the chief marketing officer, or the savior), the authors spotlight the New York Jets football coach, Bill Parcells, who inherited the team after a 1-15 loss/win record. His strategy: simplify the offense so cast-off quarterback Vinny Testaverde wouldn't throw so many interceptions. It worked and the Jets were in the playoffs after only two seasons under Parcells.

Buy this one and you'll get hooked--and you might even ignore social media for a day. The content is excellent:
* Ten Mistakes That Every Leader Makes ("Being a commander rather than a leader.")
* "Plan for every contingency--and remember that you can't plan for every contingency." (from the perforated card stock "Cheat Sheet" in the front of the book)
* When Followers Won't Follow (Symptom: "Never leave people wondering." Instead, institute a hard-and-fast policy that all questions will be answered within 48 hours.)

And...be sure to also read the excellent book, Managing For Dummies.
