4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging but Worthwhile
The is the best "leadership" book I've read! I read it from the perspective of having been in leadership roles for over 20 years, and found it helpful to translate my experiences - good and bad - to examples and techniques being described in the book. Someone who is trying to learn how to "be a leader" but has less experience either as leader or follower may find this...

2.0 out of 5 stars leadership without expertise
This book has a very narrow focus it does not explain leadership from an organisational perspective, it does have some merit from a psychology point of view, Poorly researched with no intellectual rigor.

The is the best "leadership" book I've read! I read it from the perspective of having been in leadership roles for over 20 years, and found it helpful to translate my experiences - good and bad - to examples and techniques being described in the book. Someone who is trying to learn how to "be a leader" but has less experience either as leader or follower may find this less useful.
The psychological and research-based approach are quite different from many popular books on "leadership". They may be easier reads, but I think the time spent with this book will pay greater dividends in the long run. The questions for reflection at the end of each chapter are also helpful. I'd recommend using them to aid in internalizing the lessons in the book.
The book focuses on engaging the leadership abilities of people not in positions of authority, and diving into the process of leadership, not just leadership qualities. The section on how oppressed/oppressor roles and histories affect us all, and how leadership needs to understand these, was interesting. It may seem less relevant to the average corporate executive, but is certainly relevant to some of the most difficult challenges in the world, and should be required reading for anyone who aspires to leadership.
The final section on strategies and skills was a nice refresher.
