Undoubtedly one of the worst textbooks ever written,
This review is from: Leadership and Nursing Care Management, 4e (Paperback)
This text is required for the Leadership course in my BSN curriculum. Do not even consider buying this book, even if you are required to for a class, because 1) you will never read it or 2) you will attempt to read it and either stop immediately or learn nothing. It is the wordiest, most confusing, most disorganized mess ever published. In fact, I can't believe anyone agreed to publish it. Let me refer you to one paragraph from the text that I found particularly ridiculous, so you can be assured of the accuracy of my review:
"The challenge of this issue of leadership and communication, persuasion, and negotiation revolves around who is change what, when, how, with whom, and with what outcome? How can the leaders (the "who") who are to implement holistic care - especially spiritual care (the "what") - throughout the nursing organization somehow (the "how) involve all nursing professionals (the "with whom") so that nurses will be able to provide spiritual care to patients (the "with what outcome")? That is a stand-alone paragraph, not part of a paragraph, and the rest of the text is equally confusing (at least I assume it is, because I could only make myself read a small portion of it). I have never read such absurdity in my life, and I am simply appalled that the faculty of my program selected this text for use.

A bit too wordy,

This was a required textbook and we had to read every chapter. I think the whole book could easily be cut down to 50% of the words and still convey the same material.

Leadership and Nursing Care Management 3rd ed. by Diane L. Huber,
By
This review is from: Leadership and Nursing Care Management, 3e (Paperback)
Diane Huber is the editor and contributing author of this well documented scholarly book. The book contains seven parts and 40 chapters written by 36 contributing authors. The table of contents does not identify who wrote the chapters, and there is no author index. The author is listed right under the chapter title in the chapter, and there is a list of contributors with their title and place of employment at the front of the book.
The parts are I. "Leadership and Care management Overview", II. "The Professional's Role", III. Health Care Organizations and Systems", IV. "Care Management", V. "Human Resources Management," VI. "Fiscal Management," VII. "Outcomes Management". Chapters start with chapter objectives. There are relevant quotes in some chapters. There is a content overview followed by definitions. Many well illustrated figures seem original with this book. There are also boxes and tables to illustrate the content. Leadership and management are differentiated. Chapters contain at least one research note describing the purpose, discussion and application to practice of a research study related to the topic. Chapters contain both the seminal work and current issues and trends. Chapters usually end with a summary, study questions, a case study, and critical thinking exercise. The references span five decades. The book has a glossary and index. The book also has a study guide by Diane L. Huber. Each chapter starts with the study focus or major points from the textbook. There are learning tools, case studies, case study questions, learning resources including discussion questions and study questions. References and supplemental readings are listed. The answers to the text study questions are at the end of each chapter, and the answer key to the study guide questions is at the end of the book. The book is 992 pages long making it difficult to hold and read. The greatest strength of this book (the well documented scholarship) is probably also its greatest weakness by making the book less than enjoyable reading. This book seems particularly good for identifying the scholarship related to specific leadership and management content.

Great Textbook! The information is broken down into small segments and very easy to understand.
Great reference for the class I am taking and I can see that this would be a good future reference book as well. Very prompt service from amazon as well.

Fab!,

This review is from: Leadership and Nursing Care Management, 2e (Paperback)
This is the best book I have ran across when it comes to nursing leadership and management. I am finishing my doctorate in management and organizational leadership and used this book to understand and relate to every aspect of leadership and management at the doctoral level. This book is marked up, dog eared, and worn out, but I still used it for every class.
This book is from 2000, and some of the references are germinal, I would like to see a new spin and some fresher references.

This book is wordy but comprehensive, introducing many issues facing nurse manager. Graphically, it's pleasing to the eye. If you read quickly, it's not too bad. Most useful are the references, pointing towards comprehensive coverage of many of the book's topics. You might consider retaining for future reference after class is done.

I was looking for a book for my nursing class. We were told on the day of our final exam that the course was starting a week after our finals. It was a very short notice. I looked for a low-cost fast shipping book and i found this. My book arrived just on time for my class.
