Editorial Reviews

Review

"Northouse's third edition of Leadership: Theory and Practice is one of the clearest presentations of the major theories and concepts of leadership available in print anywhere. It should be required reading for every leadership program."

(Dr.Thomas E. Matthews, Director )

"The third edition of Leadership by Northouse provides students with a powerful introduction to the strengths and limits of the social science strand of research in leadership. It provides application for undergraduates while for graduate students, it provides the context needed to plunge into reading research and developing research questions. At the same time, the book raises significant questions about the link between leadership and ethics and values."

(Roger Smitter, Ph.D., Director )

"Peter Northouse has produced a leadership textbook that is accessible to students, but solidly grounded in theory and research. He avoids the ‘trap’ of making leadership appear too easy or trite, keeping his book serious and scholarly, but still interesting and enjoyable to read. I would feel confident that a student assigned Leadership: Theory and Practice is getting a sound introduction to the field."

(Ronald E. Riggio, Ph.D. )

"I have used Leadership: Theory and Practice for the past four years as the primary text for an undergraduate leadership course that I teach. The comprehensive nature of the chapters, critiques, exercises, self-assessment instruments, and case studies make it very user-friendly for students and faculty."

(Lynn Hertrick Leavitt, Director )

"In his Third Edition, Northouse continues to update and enhance his leadership book. As a textbook for college students, the author provides an outstanding bridge between the research developments and the practical uses for leadership theory. His case study examples are contemporary, intriguing, and enticing to students and teachers who seek enhancement to their study of leadership."

(Christine D. Townsend, Professor )

"Leadership, Theory and Practice is very highly recommended -- whether for both academic study concerning leadership behavior and concrete, or for practical use by any aspiring or practicing leader in the business community today." (The Bookwatch )

5.0 out of 5 stars A High Quality Book, October 1, 2007
This review is from: Leadership: Theory and Practice (Paperback)

According to Kurt Lewin, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory". This is an apt comment in reference to Peter Northouse's book "Leadership: Theory and Practice". The author methodically and clearly explained the major theories and concepts of leadership in a readable and easily understandable manner, in a way that readers can easily implement them.

Northouse stresses the need to link leadership with ethics and values and how to apply the leadership concepts and approaches in practical real-life situations in organisations. When leadership theory and concepts are spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their application in organisations becomes self-evident. The author does a good job of presenting the leadership process in an easy to read and understand manner that is both useful and practical to all those that are interested in running successful and effective organisations. Novices will be provided a path whilst the seasoned practitioners will find affirmation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful and educational book, February 28, 2006
This review is from: Leadership: Theory and Practice (Paperback)
We are using this in my Intro to Leadership course at college and I have found the book to be very interesting. The author writes very clearly and explains everything quite well. I know its weird to write about, but I really enjoy this authors writing style. I rarely get an academic book where the writing is simple and very straight forward. In a crunch, I can read the first setence or two from each of his paragraphs and understand the concepts of the chapter quite well.

As far as leadership practice vs. theory, I am still learning about leadership so I can't say much in this regard. I believe the book has taught me more about leadership than I will ever learn actually being placed in a leadership position. I would definetely suggest reading this book, thinking about your own personal experiences while you read, and then think of ways you can apply things in real life to give your self an idea about leadership practice.

Overall, I have enjoyed every aspect of this book and found it to be very useful for assessing my own small leadership position I hold in my part-time job. Definetely a good book inside or outside the academic world for anyone working within (as a 'follower') or leading an organization.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy to follow read, October 26, 2005
This review is from: Leadership: Theory and Practice (Paperback)
Northouse's book examines each of the different theories in leadership in a clear, concise manner. Also, in the back of each chapter there is an evaluation and case studies that help synthesize the information. I was worried that wasn't going to finish the book in the time for my class, but I found it was to read through and understand in only a few sittings.
