From the Back Cover

The unforeseeably complex socio-economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century must be tackled by placing faith in the power of mankind to integrate established wisdom and new knowledge, and in our ability to collaborate for a sustainable future. Departing from this, a global 2011 conference debating papers devoted to the impact of ancient philosophy, focusing on Confucius and Aristotle, in modern leadership and management was organized by Hanban, the Athens University of Economics & Business, and the University of International Economics & Business, Beijing, China. A rich sourcebook for a broad audience, this unique volume presents the wide array of conference contributions by international thought-leaders. Departing from a foundation of general concepts of ethics and leadership the book then delves into questions about how philosophy shape emerging economic and business systems, to end with direct lessons from ancient philosophy for contemporary business challenges.

One of the best ways to learn almost anything is by examining it within the context of and in relation to other ideas and experiences. When it comes to people, commerce and organizations, Leadership through the Classics provides the tools and resources to do just that. This collection of 35 essays leverages ideas from eastern and western philosophy, religion and history to examine contemporary challenges of organizational leadership and life. As a collection, it reminds me of what is transcendent –the common themes we struggle with across the globe and throughout the ages. Yes, today's organizational challenges have their own nuances and complexities but these essays offer the opportunity to step out of your day to day frame so you can see those challenges from a different point of view. It never occurred to me to look to Confucius for insight on being an entrepreneur, that I might look to Iranian mysticism for ideas about leadership or that the Aenid could be a terrific storytelling device for enriching discussions of values-based leadership. Those are just a few examples of the kinds of insights and connections this book offers.

I approached this book from my perspective as a leadership educator and researcher and indeed it has a lot to offer. I’d also recommend it to those already schooled in the classics be they western or eastern traditions. You’ll find new insights to enrich your own knowledge base and to help others appreciate why studying the classics is so vital even in the 21st century.

Every profession may claim that everything is encompassed in its field. So marketing experts will tell you 'Marketing is everything', experts in strategy may claim the same. But none would be as justified as philosophers. Philosophy really is everything, so much so that philosophy in classical times encompassed all fields of knowledge. This book is attempting, successfully to my mind, to tread where others did not dare to; look at the most influential philosophical traditions, east and west, and explain to the reader how leadership is seen in both. For me this book is philosophically grounding what thousands may have seen through painful experience, the different roles of leadership in western and eastern markets. And for that, this volume is an essential read, because it will help explain that our expectations from leaders, companies and their behaviour should be very different given the background of each leader, company, market. And these differences are entirely rational, they are predicated on philosophy, i.e. theory that has been applied to the ground for thousands of years.
