Book Description

April 1, 2005
The key to effective leadership in the vast majority of today's churches lies as much with their governing boards as it does with their pastor. But many churches are led by those who volunteer to chair committees because there is a need, yet they have no leadership training to speak of. Aubrey Malphurs fills a gaping hole in leadership literature and offers workable strategies to train laypeople to successfully lead their churches.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The key to effective leadership in today's churches lies as much with their governing boards as it does with their pastors.

Many churches are led by volunteers who chair committees yet have little or no leadership training. Is it possible for well-meaning but often ill-prepared laypeople to guide a church body into Christ-honoring ministry?

The answer is yes, and the secret lies in offering church leaders effective, practical training. In Leading Leaders Aubrey Malphurs provides workable strategies to train laypeople to successfully lead their churches. Covering such concerns as "Who is really leading the church?" and "What do church boards do?" this book provides not only practical evaluation tools, but a plan for developing a church board that can accomplish defined and vital goals.

Including fourteen appendices and helpful questionnaires, Leading Leaders builds on the well-received Being Leaders and Building Leaders. It is a practical guide to creating and maintaining a dynamic and effective church leadership team that is spiritually equipped and properly trained to lead the local body of Christ.

Aubrey Malphurs is professor of pastoral ministries at Dallas Theological Seminary. A nationally recognized expert on leadership issues, he is the author of more than fifteen books and the president of the Malphurs Group (www.malphursgroup.com), a training and consulting organization.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Leading Leaders: Empowering Church Boards for Ministry Excellence (Paperback)
I'm currently undertaking a major project for a Doctor of Ministry degree on implementing policy governance into the board structure of our church. This book by Malphurs (which he describes as "a seminal work")is the best work I have found on the subject and will be a manual for board governance in this decade, and perhaps the next. He has custom fit John Carver's policy governance model for non-profit organizations to the church, saving church leaders time and effort in the figuring out how to adapt Carver's model to their board form and function. The value-added feature of the book is that almost half is appendices that provide 'templates' for any church seeking to clarify their board-staff relationships, and empower both elders and pastors in their respective roles. The book is groundbreaking and offers a significant boost to any church wanting to get off the ground in organizing and mobilizing their leadership for effective ministry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Long Overdue!, July 22, 2005

This review is from: Leading Leaders: Empowering Church Boards for Ministry Excellence (Paperback)
For the pastors of board-driven churches, this book is long overdue. There is a plethora of Christian leadership titles on the market, but they all are geared towards pastoral or individual roles. In this book, Malphurs focuses on the need for church board members to be well-trained as they lead congregations into the 21st century. With his rock-solid thought processes and meticulous attention to detail, the author presents a volume that is destined to be a God-send to many struggling churches. I've read many church health authors, and Malphurs is one of my favorites. I recommend this book highly.
