Editorial Reviews

Review

“Leading with strategic thinking is a fantastic place to start if you have an interest in bettering the way you behave and think (and strategise) as a leader, if you are looking for inspiration for bringing psychological or behavioural ideas to your business, or simply if you’re keen to understand more about yourself and where your actions might take you” (B2B Marketing, February 2016)

From the Inside Flap

There are countless books on strategic thinking, and even more on leadership. But so far none have effectively integrated these two topics into a practical guide for leaders who want to promote strategic thinking within their organizations. Leading with Strategic Thinking fills this gap with a focus on taking action. This book also redefines strategy, bringing together insights from cognitive psychology, systems theory, and other fields to show that the importance of strategic thought transcends planning and permeates every aspect and every level of business.

Too often, leaders think of strategy as one item on a long list of tasks they must attend to. Developing strategic plans is important, but long-term value creation does not and cannot end there. Instead, strategy is a frame of mind. And it is becoming all the more important in our era of technological and social disruptions. These changes in the status quo create massive opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and advancement. Leading with Strategic Thinking will show you how to recognize these opportunities daily, and how to achieve strategic buy-in among line managers and employees. By assimilating strategy into the every day, leaders have the potential to vastly improve organization-wide outcomes.

Effective leaders understand that, as circumstances evolve, so do the roles of executives and upper management. Thankfully, Leading with Strategic Thinking does not promote a one-size-fits all leadership approach. Instead, the authors describe four types of strategic leadership, each one of which can be adapted to particular situations. Examples and case studies show how real leaders have used these techniques to improve results. The authors' insightful discussion will help you identify your own personal leadership strengths and use these to drive the right change at the right time.

Applying strategic thought to dynamic environments requires an understanding of how to drive strategy by utilizing skills that are appropriate to the moment. The authors of Leading with Strategic Thinking distinguish between core competencies and applied competencies–a distinction that leaders will find enormously helpful as they respond to the demands of their specific environments. With the help of the tools and resources in this book, you can begin applying this strategic leadership framework right away.Whether embarking on a new project or seeking to improve overall performance, Leading with Strategic Thinking should inspire you to have a greater impact, today and into the future.

If you are interested in the topic of leadership or strategy, then I would recommend picking up this book. What I like most about Leading with Strategic Thinking is that it brings together two critical components of organizational effectiveness – leadership and strategy – and provides a conceptual framework and insights on the importance of their intersection. Beyond a strong theory base, the book has a wealth of real examples highlighting insights gained from leaders who have effectively driven change by weaving together strategic thinking and the art of leadership. As someone with experience in leading people in both formulating and executing strategy in the military, corporate, and nonprofit sectors - each with very different contexts - this book captures the essence of challenges often faced by leaders in a multitude of settings. The authors also use practical examples throughout to provide guidance on the type of strategic leadership that could be used or adapted to most effectively gain insights and drive change in various situations. The bottom line is the book is an enjoyable and relevant read for leaders at any level who desire to further develop skills necessary to increase effectiveness and confidence when faced with complex opportunities or challenges.

Simerson and Olson focus on the intersection between strategic thinking and leadership and help us understand that there is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Describing four different styles of strategic thinking, this book helps you determine which style is yours and how to successfully utilize your style from the thinking through implementation stages of an effective strategy while compensating for your blind spots, providing clarity to your organization, and gaining support for the strategy. Definitely worth reading--and reading again when your context changes.

I found this book particularly useful for mentors nurture budding leaders (frontline to echelon). As a resource, both mentor and mentee can dialogue on each chapter, compare their experiences against the described stories (cases on successes as well as failures of real-world leaders). Definitely a book that appeals to both the heart and the mind, as it balances the art and science of strategy and leadership. Readers can easily adapt the book's perspectives and recommendations into their own context. And even plan actions/activities to fine-tune their leadership skills, and achieve strategic organizational impact!

Finding the "right" leadership is a question that many organizations struggle with on a daily basis. The authors have put together a great study on how game theory, cognitive psychology and systems thinking can be effectively integrated into strategic thinking. Well done and a pleasure to read.

This book is presented such that the knowledge will stay with you in an actionable way. Every concept is presented along with subcategories to further break down the concept and real-world examples to exhaustively elaborate the points made. For instance, from the very beginning, essential concepts of leadership and strategic thinking are presented and then reinforced by four real-world examples of leaders acting in real life to bolster the definitions and theorems put forth (at Disney, General Electric, 3M, and through Nelson Mandela). The base "wiring" psychology that drives strategic thinking is also presented so that the behaviors suggested can be rationalized from one's true essence and one's interactions with others in business and practical situations. Four elaborate and useful case studies are also presented. Finally, exhaustive scenarios are provided to paint a tangible picture of how these concepts can be applied so that this valuable text does not become the usual book on the shelf. This is great material. Highly recommended.
