3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining sequel
A sequel to The Shopkeeper. I don't read many westerns, but I enjoyed The Shopkeeper and the character of Steve Dancy. Leadville doesn't disappoint either. Steve and his mining buddy Jeff Sharp connect up with their old Pinkerton friend Joseph McAllen to track down the Indians who have abducted his daughter. Steve's old nemesis, Mrs. Bolton returns and is as evil as...

Steve Dancy in back and taking the reader for a high mountain adventure in the Rocky Mountains this time. There's kidnapping, hard riding, hunting, gunfights, political wrangling, business development, cowboys, Indians, hard men, sassy women, the good life, and the hard life all rolled into this fast-moving tale.

Mr. Best does an artful job of showing the details of a day in the old west, so that you can virtually see the scene in your mind's eye. He also develops the characters so that they seem real. I was most taken by his especially bad villians - both male and female in this book.

A good adventure for the reader!

Ever since I finished The Shopkeeper, I've been waiting for the next book in the series. Leadville didn't disappoint. It kept me up nights again. I not only got Steve Dancy, but all his friends were back. Again, awesome!

Another great book by James Best! Loved "Leadville" as much as the first book in the series, "The Shopkeeper". Great action and plenty of laughs. Steve Dancy is a very likable lead character surrounder by many others.

Hope there are other books in the series to come. A fun and enteraining read. Westerns at their "Best".

5.0 out of 5 stars Uptown Western - Full of Action, April 3, 2009
This review is from: Leadville (Paperback)
This was a very exciting book which kept you on the edge of your seat. I liked the gun handling and the authenticity of the details on the period guns. Steve Dancy leads you through scenes of ambush, hunting, gun fights, big business strategies, urban renewal, firearms instructions, deception, and life changing decisions.

Buy the series so you can keep reading. A very interesting concept of making a new story of powerful men and putting it back into the old west. It's great summer reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Newfound western fan, May 23, 2009
This review is from: Leadville (Paperback)
I had never been much of a fan of western novels, until a friend gave me a copy of "The Shopkeeper" by James Best. As soon as I heard that he had written a sequel, I quickly obtained a copy.
The author's style is such that he brings the characters to life, and pulls you into the story. It is easy to envision them and understand more about the old west. As mentioned above, I was not a fan of western novels, but have always been interested in history.

As somewhat of an amateur historian, I can tell you that Mr. Best has done his research. His novels contain details of what it was like to live at that time, and you find yourself almost a part of the story.
I would highly recommend these two westerns to anyone with an imagination and curiosity about the history of our country. And besides, they are just excellent reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sequel to The Shopkeeper, August 11, 2009

Leadville is a darker story than The Shopkeeper, but I may have liked it even more. Mr. Best does an excellent job of keeping the plot moving and I love the characters. This is a great series and I hope the books keep coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great action packed Western, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Leadville (Paperback)
I loved this book as much as I loved Mr. Best's first Steve Dancy tale, The Shopkeeper. The story transports me back to the old west, where all the characters come alive amid gun fights, drunken saloon brawls and posse hunts. The story is filled with surprises, and kept my interest to the very end. I look forward to more Steve Dancy books.

Read this book fast, just like the first one. I found myself planning my day around getting back to it. This is a great series. Leadville is less a sequel than a continuation of The Shopkeeper. I loved the characters in the first book and they're all back in Leadville. The bad guys are really bad, and the good guys are heroic. but not perfect. You could probably start with Leadville, but I think this book is better if you read The Shopkeeper first.
