Simply Beautiful...,
By Christine "loves to read" (Setauket, NY, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Leah's Pony (School & Library Binding)
Not only is this book beautifully illustrated (the pictures are so detailed and colorful that they literally jump out of the book with each turn of the page), but it carries a poignant story about a family that pulls together through the efforts of a little girl and her pony.Leah is a very smart farm girl who lives in the Great Plains during the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression. When her father cannot meet his loan obligations, the family farm has to be put up at auction. Leah's prize possession is her new pony ("the best in the county") and she comes up with an ingenious plan on how to use the pony to save her family's farm. This is a remarkable story about a very clever girl. I can't say too much without giving away the entire story, but suffice it to say that this is an educational, inspirational and artistic masterpiece that should be on every child's shelf. An added bonus: the author includes a very good historical summary at the end of the book. Enjoy. Cris

Leah's Pony,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Leah's Pony (Paperback)
This was a captivating story about a young girl and her family's struggles. There is a chance she may lose her best friend, her pony, because of her family's financial troubles. The resolution to this crisis is both heartwarming and inspiring. Leah's selfless act influences others to help as well. You'll love the auction and the ending!

This book is a great example of the kindness shown by neighbors and the toughness of the American family farm in the dust bowl era. Excellent illustrations and spare use of text.

Leah's Pony,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Leah's Pony (Paperback)
Have you ever read Leah's Pony? Well, I have and it was worth my while. It took place in the 1930's and has a great description of how life was for farmers back then. It would be great for horse lovers, people interested in the Great Depression and in history.
What is the book about you ask? Well, it is about a girl named Leah who had an amazing pony. The clerk told her that every day. But her family was going through a crisis, they were in debt. So the state had an auction. She was always so loyal. So she thought, "Since my horse is so fine, should I sell it for the family?" She loved that horse will she sell it? That is such a good book. It opened my eyes to all the struggles they had. It also helped me understand the Great Depression. It will be worth your time. Dena DME

5 Stars? Or 5 Hankies?,

One of my favorite children's books, just like "It's a Wonderful Life" is one of my favorite films. Can I get through either without rushing to the restroom for a tissue? No, and neither will you, unless you have a cold moldy stone for a heart!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Leah's Pony (School & Library Binding)
This is an excellent book that I just recently purchased. My daughter had checked it out at her school library some years ago, and we both fell in love with it. Not only are the pictures beautifully-illustrated, but the story is about a little girl who has learned what truly matters in life, and gives sacrificially to that end. Highly recommended for any age.

Hard Times....,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Leah's Pony (Paperback)
An Outstanding book! Leah`s Pony taught me about the way people lived during the Great Depression. Kids back then had to make sacrifices just to help their family make a little money. It taught me that families had to auction off their farms. They would sell chickens, cows, farming tools, and cars. Families from all over the town would come to these auctions.
Leah`s Pony also taught me about people in the U.S. During the Great Depression people still cared about each other. Friends would still help each other, maybe not giving them money, but just giving them a hand. In the story Leah`s family had to sell their stuff, after people bought their stuff they would give it back to Leah`s family. The Great Depression was a hard time but friends still needed each other. Friends are friends no matter what! Kylie DME |
