You never know how great it is until it works.,

I've had one of these for well over a year. Originally put it in my basement next to the water heater. We had had problems with water in the past (water softener issues, some rain seepage, etc) but we managed to repair those problems. Never heard anything from my little Leakfrog until a couple of nights ago.
In the middle of the night, I heard beeping coming from somewhere. It was enough to wake both me and my dog. Mind you, my bedroom is on the second floor, and the Leakfrog is in the basement. So it's plenty loud. Finally figured out that it was the Leakfrog coming from the basement. The flexible water line going from the water supply to the water heater had started leaking. I doubt it had been leaking for more than an hour or so; there was only a small wet spot on the floor. So I shut off the valve to the heater and went back to bed. 10 hours and $10 in replacement parts later, it was fixed. Mind you, in those 10 hours, the water on the floor had completely dried, that's how little water it took to activate the alarm. Had I not had the Leakfrog, it could have been weeks (and possibly causing substantial damage to the water heater or other items in the basement) before I would have noticed the leak. I highly recommend this for anyone that has a potential for leakage that could possibly go unnoticed.

My hero, the basement saver!,
By Nickels (Warrington, PA USA) - See all my reviews Without the leak frog our basement would have severely flooded. We don't go down there enough to notice any problems, and this could have gotten out of hand quickly. A lot of people laughed at me when I purchased this item. As funny as this product seems, the job it did today was really no joke.

Leak Frog is a clever water leak detector I have owned for about a year. I have placed it beside our shower/tub where it has already notified, me (during showing) that I have gotten our hardwood floor there a little too wet. Basically, water leak detectors are like home smoke detectors except that they alarm with water leaks rather than fire. It takes very little water (maybe 1/16" inch below them) to activate. We have lots of hardwood floors, and have gone through the pain of having portions of them destroyed by a leaking refrigerator water line, so I have become a water-leak-detector geek. While I am not sure that the product will make competitors green with envy, the packaging and price caught my eye at my local hardware store. I paid less than $10 for it. Time will tell whether the Leak Frog has the quality of its primary competitor, Zircon, but so far, I have not been disappointed. If Leak Frog has a few downsides, they are its relatively high profile (might not fit under refrigerators or other areas which are sometimes a tight squeeze), and Ziron uses 9 volt batteries which seem simpler than the three AAA cells used by the Leak Frog. I have no idea how long the batteries last, and that will be important. The Zircon 9 volt battery lasts literally for years. I also wonder why they would bother putting a button on the Leak Frog to test it. Wetting ones fingers and touching the two metal water detection contactors works and seems to be a more direct test. Despite a few uncertainties, from a cleverness of name and appearance view, Leak Frog seems to have a jump on the competition!

Works great and plenty loud enough,
This review is from: Leak Frog LF001 Water Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
We've used leakfrogs in our basement (near heating and plumbing), in our laundry room and in the attic where we have another hvac unit. Our leakfrogs work *great*. They've worked exactly as designed when we've had a couple of washer problems, and have really saved the day when our attic hvac condensor drain got plugged up.
Not sure why some people are complaining about the volume. These are not intended to be burglar-alarm loud, but the high-pitched beeping is *plenty* loud enough to hear from another floor or several rooms away. You may not hear it immediately, but within a minute it got our attention to leaks that could have caused severe damage. Leakfrogs are indispensible, in addition to being cute and fun. They make *great* gifts for parents and relatives who seem to have everything. Highly recommended.

leakfrog,
By He's now sitting inside the basement door, ready to alert us the next time the stairwell drain gets clogged with leaves. He's cute, too, and a conversation piece.

Sump Pump Failure - Leak Frog Saved My Basement,
By B-Dawg "MN Homeowner" (MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Leak Frog LF001 Water Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
About a couple years ago I invested in a couple of of Leak Frog water detectors. They were cheap at the time and thought I probably would ever really need them but thought better safe then sorry. Well, last night we had some incredible rain falls in our area and my wife heard this chirping coming from the basement. Luckly, I was just walking in the door and we found our Leak Frog going off by our sump pump hole. The pump had failed and water was starting to gush over the top of the concrete.
Thankfully, I had a spare pond pump in which I was able to start pumping water out of the hole via a garden hose out the front door. Meanwhile I ran to Lowes and picked up a new pump and installed it. Having a finished basement and very little wet carpet that is by the utility area, the damage was very minimal and nothing fans won't dry up. The basement damage could of been much worse if it hadn't been for Leak Frog! I never write reviews, but I thought this product deserved some praise!

The little frogs are definitely a must for anyone who has water issues or just wants to be safe that water does not accumulate in places you are not always in! We have a few spots that sometimes get water and these little guys are great! Very sensitive and the alarm is easy to hear.

I have several coral reef aquariums with complex sump and filtration systems that occasionally result in leaks. I've used several brands of water detectors but the little Leak Frog is the best. One key design element that makes this one better is the dome shaped case. It makes the detector very stable and as long as the frog is upright, you know the sensors are on the floor. Other detectors can be easily knocked on their side or turned upside down and you might not even notice until it's too late. My frog was loud enough to awaken me in the middle of the night when a drain tube clogged, saving the lives of my expensive fish and corals and preventing the mess that 50 gallons of salt water would have made in my family room.

These are not loud at all,
By Kevin (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews To test them I dumped a cup of water on the ground. They went off like they should, but we cannot hear them from the first floor of our house. The beep they emit is so soft you can talk over it. I was expecting them to be as loud as a smoke detector. I end up getting alarms with 110 dB sirens that can be heard anywhere in our house. Why have an alarm if no one can hear it? The only time I maybe see these being useful is under a sink and even then I'd rather have one of the 110db alarms. I want something to wake me up in the middle of the night. With the Leakfrogs I wouldn't know about the leak until I woke up. |
