Book Description

2008
Lean Lexicon: A Graphical Glossary for Lean Thinkers. Drawing up a comprehensive list of lean terms is not an easy task. Many members of the Lean Community have gained their knowledge from different sources and use terms in slightly different ways. We therefore have devised two simple principles for selecting terms: 1) The term is important, you really need it to successfully operate a lean system. 2) The term is in widespread use, it's not just company speak, but lives in the broader community. The Lean Enterprise is a nonprofit education, publishing, conferencing, and management research center founded in 1997 by lean management expert James P. Womack. Its mission is to promote the principles of lean thinking in every aspect of business across a wide range of manufacturing and service industries in order to help organizations transform themselves into lean enterprises. The publications teach lean methods and principles, while our management seminars assist managers and executives in developing the leadership behaviors necessary to create and sustain lean enterprises.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lean REFERENCE book, January 6, 2006
This review is from: Lean Lexicon 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
If you are involved in training an organization in lean principles and want to provide an unbiased, well defined glossary on lean concepts and terms commonly used--this is an excellent book. First and foremost, it is a REFERENCE BOOK--it sits on your desk or in your department library for quick reference. The reason I love this book is the succinct explanation of the A3 lean methodology--it is perfect. If you want to continue to have a quickie ref to keep people on track with lean principles plus sustain and improve your processes after your initial events (kaizens or kaikakus)--keep this book in your library and use the A3 methodology.

2.0 out of 5 stars And Now a Lean Dictionary, November 23, 2004
This review is from: Lean Lexicon 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
This pricey little (5" x 8" spiral bound) listing of lean manufacturing terms (Lean Enterprise style) is a good (and the only one that I know of) compilation of the Japanese lanquage terms of lean manufacturing replete with diagrams.
It is a great reference for all the lean wanna be's and is great for settling lean terminology bets, but it is far too shallow a reference to appreciably improve your knowledge of lean manufacturing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A user-friendly lexicon which is a great tool for teams, January 8, 2012
By
Cat (Haute-Savoie, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lean Lexicon 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
This spiral-bound book contains many graphics, and contains easy-to-understand examples of the concepts that are defined. Having worked with various teams, this is the type of lexicon I would put in everybody's hands because it is user-friendly.

A couple of examples: the A3 graphic in the A3 report entry will help all team members understand what an A3 report can look like and how it can help with the success of a lean project.

Value-Stream mapping: another great graphical example with good explanations and reference to linked concepts.

Keep it simple... A job well done.
