5.0 out of 5 stars The most abused book in my kitchen
When the Navy told my husband to shape up or ship out, we knew we had to do something about our diet. I pored over the local library selection of lowfat cookbooks and tried dozens of recipes. Most tasted like something between braised cardboard and sauteed rubber. Yum. Eventually I made it to the "L" section and stumbled across Lean and Lovin' It. Frankly, at...

1.0 out of 5 stars your literary insulin will overflow
Many of the recipes are edible enough. Some of them are even tasty. (They're not especially healthful, as a rule, but that's a different critique.)

What's harder to swallow is the mawkish, self-indulgent autobiographical gems stuffed throughout the text. The author believes, I guess, that readers are far more interested in him than in the recipes. Get over...

5.0 out of 5 stars The most abused book in my kitchen, December 19, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Lean and Lovin' It: Exceptionally Delicious Recipes for Low-Fat Living and Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)
Frankly, at this point I was pretty disheartened, (not to mention heart-burned from all that bad food), but I was determined that there must be one good lowfat cookbook out there. Well, I hit pay dirt with this one! The recipes in this one were not out of the ordinary eggplant and tofu creations that no one in this solar system actually eats. This guy had taken normal everyday foods that we human beings not only eat but LOVE and showed me how to take the fat out of them. You mean I DON'T have to change my diet to lose weight? I can just change the way I fix my food? What a revalation!!! I tried recipe after recipe in this book, and I was amazed at how good my food tasted in its lowfat form. More to the point, I was amazed at how my food still tasted like MY FOOD after removing that unwanted fat. Well, I kept cooking and trying those recipes and kept rechecking that book out from the library for so long, they finally told me I couldn't check it out anymore. I knew then it was time to get my own. I can't wait for it to arrive from Amazon because I already know this is going to be the most used and abused book in my kitchen. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely delicious recipes using easy-to-find ingredients., January 5, 1999

This review is from: Lean and Lovin' It: Exceptionally Delicious Recipes for Low-Fat Living and Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)
My kitchen shelves are full of recipe books claiming delicious recipes for low-fat cooking. Many have ingredients only a gourmet cook would have or ingredients found only in organic food stores or specialty shops, neither of which is located within 60 miles of my home. Don's recipes are absolutely delicious and easy to prepare using readily available ingredients. All recipes I have prepared could be served to any guests without fear they "taste" low fat (in other words tasteless). Many authors use similar ingredients over and over and their recipes began to taste the same--not Don's, all have a unique taste. I can hardly wait for another cookbook from Don Mauer--I'll be one of his first customers.

5.0 out of 5 stars not bad, August 5, 1999

most lowfat cookbooks make you think you're eating cardboard & sawdust. (no flames, please. i know that cardboard & sawdust are healthy.) this cookbook does a very nice job. it's also *simple*, void of arcane ingredients (one of its competitor books specifies "Vietnamese red rice," not exactly a staple on the Safeway shelves). the seafood recipes are particularly good. you can make these tasty dishes with minimum fuss and maximum enjoyment.

I bought this book in 1996 for myself after getting it out of the Northbrook, IL library. Now I am buying it for others as gifts. The receipes are down home, common sense, appealing and satisfying. Don Mauer's personal story is inspiring.

Out of all the cookbooks i own - which is quite a few - this is by far the most favorite. The recipes are very easy to prepare and taste great. Since i've got the book couple of months ago, i've been using it almost exclusively to try as many recipes as i can, and they've all been phenomenal thus far.

This book and Don Mauer's other book (Guy's Guide to Great Eating) have helped me lose over 70 pounds. As other reviewers have stated, the recipes are both easy and flavorful, but I think the best thing about the recipes in this book is that they are so satisfying that you don't think about the fact that they are low fat as you are eating them. This cookbook is going to be a big part of my weight maintenance plan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - Top of The Line Cookbook!!, October 26, 2007
I highly recommend this book! Every recipe is wonderful & healthy! The recipes are well laid out, use everyday ingredients and are quick & easy to make. Don is featured in Cooking Light and is well-respected in the culinary world. I've yet to received any negative feedback on any of the dishes I've prepared from this cookbook. Try it - you will not be dissapointed.

I got your book and I love it. My husband is not use to eating alot of low-fat foods but he loves it also. The recipes are so easy to make and alot of people can't tell that it is low-fat. I wish he would make another book with even more recipes. Thanks for making the book we really enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book even for the Asian cook, August 31, 2003

Hello!

I borrowed this book from the library and tried one or 2 recipes, it was so great, I decided to get it off Amazon in the end. Although some of the items are not available in Singapore e.g. butter buds is a little hard to find, there are ready substitutes.

Generally, if you are from Asia, can go a little easier on the sugar and be more proactive on spices to fit asian tastebuds. Beyond that, most recipes are winners. So far those that are confirmed great (I have cooked them at least 4 times) are the turkey gumbo and the brownies.

All the taste without the unneeded fat plus you don't get that odd yicky feeling when you eat sugar substitutes etc.

With these recipes, I can prepare foods for me and my family that are low in fat and health conscious. Although these fit well into a weight loss program, my family and guests enjoy great tasting foods without ever realizing they are missing out on calories and fats.
