5.0 out of 5 stars My son loves this toy!
Although I'm sick that the price is so much lower this year, I still have to give the Didj an awesome review. My 6 year old son asked for it for Christmas last year instead of the DS that the older kids requested. I got it based on the LeapFrog brand. He has played with it nearly every day for the last year. His math, spelling, and reading skills have all improved,...

My 6 year old son asked for it for Christmas last year instead of the DS that the older kids requested. I got it based on the LeapFrog brand. He has played with it nearly every day for the last year. His math, spelling, and reading skills have all improved, but he doesn't realize that he's learning - he's just playing Didj! Finding new games has been a challenge, and it goes through batteries like crazy, but he plays with it more than the older kids play with their DSs. At this price, grab it!

Leapfrog has just discontinued the Didj, and just came out with a brand new system, the Leapster Explorer. The Didj was not a success for Leapfrog. From customers reviews (both on Amazon, but also on the Leapfrog site itself) it appears it was flawed by bugs, and needed constant patches to fix the problems. Some customers also did not find the Didj games very educational. In comparison, Leapster 2 games get much higher rating for being fun and educational.

In contrast to the Didj, the Leapster2 was and still is a success for Leapfrog. It gets overall good ratings from customers. And kids and parents like the games for being fun and educational. The Leapster2 is NOT discontinued, and Leapfrog informs it will continue to support it and to develop games for it. I'm thinking, perhaps Leapfrog will discontinue the Leapster2 in the future too, that is if the Explorer becomes a huge success. But for now Leapfrog will continue with the Leapster2. So it's still a good and proven system to get. You can read my review on the Leapster2.

The Leapster Explorer is the brand new system (released on 1-july 2010). According to Leapfrog the Explorer is not a successor to the Didj nor the Leapster2, but an entirely new system with much better specs and functionality. It's too early to tell, but I expect the Explorer to become a success too, because I take it Leapfrog has learned from experience to make a much better system now. You can read my review on the Explorer.

We have the L-Max, Leapster2, and now also the Explorer. We don't have the Didj, but I have read a lot about the Didj when researching the other systems. I felt compelled to write a review when I saw pretty recent reviews on the Didj posted on Amazon.

I hope this information is helpful to someone. Thanks for reading.

Durable game, well made and has survived a few drop tests. The games are fun, and the graphics and sound are great. The learning value of the games is not all that challenging, and only a small amount of learning thrown into the games. What is a real aggravation for the kids and parents is after a couple hours of gameplay the unit says its time to hookup to the computer for a "tune up". Also the battery life is not that great. I had to purchase several sets of high output nickel metal rechargable batteries. About the time the batteries go low and need recharging, its also time for the old "tune up" again. The tune up process is a real hassle, hookup to PC.. and it has to be one you have the software for the game downloaded on. It takes very long for it to download its updates too. The real kicker is that when it says it needs a tuneup it doesnt allow game play anymore at all until that is done. So if your on vacation, or a road trip the toy is good only for a bit if you dont have a PC to hookup to. If I had to do it again and knew about this upfront I wouldnt have bought it for them. Would have found another system that does not stop game play with updates needed constantly.
On a buyer/seller note. This was the best price I found anywhere on the net for this game. A whole lot less than other sellers.

I comtemplated purchasing the Diji after comparing to the Leapster or the Nintendo DSI. When we took it out of the box, I was frustrated with the constant updates required. I believe it had to do with the draining of standard batteries...but after I purchase the Diji Charging Base, it has been the best game system ever! It's durable, and it pushes the children to think as they play. My daughter just turned 6, and when she tells me she's bored..I tell her to get her Diji. We sit down and we play different games, and she likes to show me how far she has progressed. She now knows how to do her time tables (6x6, 7x5, 1x4, etc.) as a result of the Diji Games.
I no longer have any complaints, but i wish they had more choices for games. The funny thing is, she was able to do things on the system...that I asked "how did you do that?"
I spent a little less for this package during the holidays; but it's worth it. If you're wanting something that you can give your child and they go away; then this is not the system until they get a hang of it. If you don't mind from time to time working with your child as they ask questions; then you' will love it. It provides an opportunity to be engaged....the great part is my 3 year old is shouting answers to the addition problems we answer on the game. (Now she is asking for a game..)

I first purchased this item in January, as a BD gift for my 6-year old Granddaughter. As it turned out, her older (8 Years old) brother would not leave it alone, so when his BD rolled around in February, I purchased a DIDJ for him. I was happy to get a very good buy on it through Amazon. Their Mother tells me that it is his favorite possession, and whenever I see him he has it in hand. I am about to purchase a third DIDJ, through Amazon, for another Grand who will be 6 in April. It is such a pleasure to find an item that is well-made, entertaining, and educational. I might add that these children have enjoyed several of the Leapfrog products over the years.

This has proven to be a very durable, fun toy.

My daughter never seems to get tired of playing the games. It is a good balance of educational and fun.

Make sure to update to the latest firmware.

My 7 year old loves this. He doesn't even mind answering the math questions because he's so excited to keep playing. It's a great sneaky way to fit in learning. I do wish there were more areas of education rather than just the math, but hey, that's a small complaint. Oh, also, I don't love how hard it is to pull out the compartments that the batteries are in. Otherwise, great game. So much better than other options that are mind draining. Leapfrog really knows how to entertain and teach kids at the same time!

I bought this for my 7yr old daughter so she would have something constructive to do on those long trips in the car, she loves it!! it's the best hand held game "i think" for a child so far, and this is the cheapest place i found one. she learns as she plays and as she progresses i can increase difficulty so she continues to learn and i can keep track of her progress along the way. there is a decent amount of games and variety to choose from so finding something she will enjoy is pretty easy if you know where to look for them, i have yet to find them at wal-mart but target has several as well as the internet.
