2.0 out of 5 stars 4 yr. old has no interest in this toy
I bought this toy for my son's 4th birthday after reading the rave reviews on this site. He seems to be above average in intelligence, and can stay focused for long periods of time. This toy does not capture his interest - not even in the least bit. How it works: On each level, the toy plays a sequence (i.e. count to five, sings a song, names of months in the year,...

This is a fabulous and unique toy. My preschooler loves this game and it is a toy that actually holds his attention for an extended period of time (which is rare). The basic concept of the game is for a child to remember a sequence and activate each of the five Fix-Its in the proper order. It hones listening skills, memory, sequencing, and even spatial awareness since each Fix-It operates a different way. It is amazing to see my little one exercise and develop his memory and logical throught processes right before my eyes. It is also uncanny how well this toy caters to the preschooler-brain, in every way. It is like my child inherently understands how to play. I would highly recommend this toy to any child. LeapFrog has scored another hit in our home.

PROS
- Three different levels for increasingly challenging games
- Cute, catchy music and sounds
- Different types of learning (i.e., straight numerical sequencing, musical sequencing, activity sequencing, etc)
- Colorful and durable
- Hold my child's interest and is something he really loves to play
- Gives my child an immediate sense of accomplishment and encourages rapid learning
- Exercises memory and logical thought processes
- Child can really play this autonomously with no coaching from a parent (which in some cases can also be a CON - see below)

CONS (hard to find any, and these are really small gripes)
- Level 1 is a little too simple. My kid mastered it in less than five minutes -- although, since every round is a different light-up sequence he will play it over and over (and over!) again.
- Could have a little more variety. Although my kid loves the toy, hearing the same song over and over again gets a little tiring for mommy.
- Level 3 should be more varied to take full advantage of the light-up sequencing and different ways to challenge the memory other than the way the rest of the levels are played.
- Keep in mind this one is not a toy that requires a lot of parental involvement. Once your child gets the concept of how to play, there is nothing for mom to do other than watch and congratulate. I only list this as a con because I know lots of parents like to be involved in their child's play, so do not expect that from this toy. However when there are times you need for your kid to entertain himself, this toy is perfect!

SUMMARY
A wonderful, unique educational toy that your child will greatly enjoy and one that you can feel good about purchasing! Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars 4 yr. old has no interest in this toy, October 19, 2009

I bought this toy for my son's 4th birthday after reading the rave reviews on this site. He seems to be above average in intelligence, and can stay focused for long periods of time. This toy does not capture his interest - not even in the least bit. How it works: On each level, the toy plays a sequence (i.e. count to five, sings a song, names of months in the year, etc.). As the game is verbally saying the sequence, the "gizmos" light up. Each gizmos is assigned to one of the parts of the sequence. Then, the child is expected to activate each gizmo in the correct order of the sequence. (It reminds me EVER SO SLIGHTLY of the game Simon.) If the child activates a gizmo out of sequence, the game plays a 'you got it wrong' series of buzzes. Then the child can try another gizmo until he selects the correct gizmo in the sequence. While watching my son play the game: He has no interest in what the game wants him to do; so he touches various gizmos in the wrong order; which leads to wrong button buzzing; then he's less interested because the unit is just a bunch of buzzing and lights flashing; and he puts it down about 30 seconds laters. Maybe it's just too hard for him; but both my husband and I played it and we find nothing appealing about it either. I wish I could see the kids of all the other reviewers play this because they make it sound like the best game ever. I'm at a complete loss as to what they are seeing that we're not.

UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE: Two days after I wrote the above review, my son picked this game up and didn't want to put it down. I guess it just took him a while to warm up to it; and patience on my part in terms of seeing him eventually enjoy it. This toy is a winner -- but be patient if it seems like a dud at first!

I bought this for my daughters 4th birthday. I would highly reccommend this for 3-5 year olds. However, my son who is 5 1/2 can do this on the hardest setting very very quickly, and is very bored with it. I would definately not reccommend this for a 6 year old. My 4 year old daughter finds it hard (but very fun) on the lowest setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Gifted Toddler, July 21, 2009
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

My two year old can read and skip count. It can be tough to find toys like this that will stand up to a toddler's abuse but go beyond phonics and counting to ten. This toy fits the bill. He knows much of the information it presents, but not all of it, and with the memory and sequencing skills involved, it's fun and challenging anyway. Plus, operating the "fix-its" probably helps develop fine motor skills.

I think any toddler might enjoy this toy. (Even if a toddler tries it out and isn't ready for it just yet, he'll grow into it.) I allow very few electronic toys in the house and recommend even fewer. This one makes the cut.

Purchased for a 5 year old to give them practice with sequencing and building listening skills. Child loves playing with it, their 7 year old sibling also can't leave it alone. They have fun playing in two player mode when the 5 year old will share. I find it durable. It fell off the kitchen counter and has been dropped by our toddler (who also wants to play with it) and still works great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm missing something..., January 5, 2010

But this toy hasn't been very interesting to my daughter at all. She's 3, and a very bright child, but this toy has never even made it properly out of the packaging. Maybe she will be like another reviewer's child and go back to it later and love it, but so far, she's not had any interest in it. She played with it for a few minutes the day she got it and I've not seen her play with it since.

Maybe we have a bad one, but it doesn't seem to have any way to differentiate the different parts of the sequence . All the lights flash at the same time no matter what setting or sequence it's playing at the time, so my daughter will try to get to the very first one, and if she gets it wrong more than a couple of times, it skips to a new game. The sound also seems to come out of one main area, so even listening to get the sequence right by judging where the sound came from is impossible. It doesn't have a demo mode, so I know that's not it. I expected better from Leap Frog.

My almost-4-year-old re-discovered this toy which we'd received as a gift for his 3rd birthday - it was a little too advanced for him at the time but now is right up his alley. He is inexplicably interested in this toy. It comes with no instructions whatsoever and what exactly you are supposed to do is a little unclear at first. Generally, you are given a set of 5 instructions that you need to put in the right order by hitting the buttons in the right order once the game has randomly assigned each step to a button. Once I played around with it for a minute I figured it out and could teach him but was sure he'd hate it, and I was wrong. I'm still not a big fan of this game because it doesn't provide much variety - there are three levels but level 1 only has two sets of instructions to sort, and level 3 seems short as well. It is also loud with no volume adjustment, and for what you get it should be half this price.

For pros, it is colorful, once your child gets going with it s/he can play independently, and it helps reiterate daily activities like the steps involved with washing your hands.

I'd suggest some of LeapFrog's other toys (love the Scribble n' Write!) instead.

In theory this toy is a great idea and very educational. It teaches kids how to put things in order and how to remember a sequence. The only problem with it in practice is that there aren't enough sequences to do so kids get very bored quickly. There are only 2 different ones on the first level and only about 4 on the other levels.

I bought this toy for my 4 year old grandson's birthday. He is able to do the activities "solo" with no difficulty. My daughter tells me that she has to take it away form him when it's time for bed... he loves playing it so much. That's good enough for me!!
